I've got a mate coming down to refit my drivers side seat belt retaining bolt;

He's going to weld a new plate in the area of the Fuel cap, i've taken off the overflow bottle ( there's one on each side apparently) and he has asked me if i'm putting it back in place when he's finished.

Do I really need this bottle or can I just blank the pipes off?

You need to fit the expansion tanks - VW didn't put them in for fun.
The tank shape means that they are necessary.

Thanks for the response, I kinda knew the answer as I was typing the question, but the damage caused by corrosion behind the tanks is worsened by them being there in the first instance,I think i'll grease her up before I refit it.

They are pretty tight to get back in, I spent ages pushing away, then I realised the error of my ways and just enlarged the bolt hole slightly on the tank - now easy and nipping the nut up means it doesnt go anywhere

You actually fit them over the stud first then push the tank up and it pops into place.
