Just match what was used. Never measured it but think its 6mm
This may prove useful if you're in that area.

The other option (and some have done it) is to fit another relay so the demands on that cable are even less. I didn't go that route myself as starter circuits aren't the easiest thing to get at, particularly in the winter or when its pouring down and I didn't want to introduce more connections and potentially more failure points - just a personal preference. However, the principle is sound and I understand why some owners do it.
I think if I did choose to fit one, I'd make sure the relay was a really good one and actually inside the vehicle rather than underneath to ensure reliability and make it easier to get at. For now, a single cable works ok for me. Just make sure both ends are clean and sound and use shrink tubing ideally. Starter spade terminals are a notorious weak point on most v-dubs and do need inspecting properly at least once a year, relay or no relay.
Making an inspection hatch that you can open from inside the vehicle seems a good idea to me. Its better than laying on snow/ice. If I get around to doing that, I'll WIKI where the hatch should be cut and how.
