Hi

I have a 2.0l Aircooled Devon Moonraker, on the right hand side of the engine bay there are 2x cables that come through the tin ware and connect to a single cable that goes to the alternator.

The wiring which sits in side a sleeve has become brittle and has snapped, will 40 amp wire be ok to use as a replacement and will it need to have some sort of heat shield over it.

Personally I would use 6mm stranded wire.

You should have two cables coming from a single ring terminal on the starter motor to the three pin plug on the alternator. The two wires are just parallel from the starter motor as two cables in parallel can carry more current than one wire of equal size and are more flexible. If you still have a plug in connector to the alternator just replace the wires with two 2.5mm thin wall cables.
The other blue wire in the plug is for the battery warning light.

You might want to look at renewing the lot all the way up to battery as most T25s now have fairly ageing main cables:

Many thanks for all your replies, cable now replaced, I also replaced the main battery cable and cleaned all the earth while I was at it, yesterday the starter motor packed up, the case has rotted through in places it's probably the original (36 yrs old)
I have removed the bottom fixing nut but when looking at the top of the starter I cannot see the other fixing nut, is it round past the solenoid out of sight.

I would never have found it, I will try and post up a picture of the starter tomorrow when I get it off, it looks like its been underwater for the last 36 years.
