WD40 (corrected) to the rescue - sliding door

For a while now my sliding door hasn't closed properly. It would spring out to the 'safety' latch, and more recently didn't always hold there, sometimes sliding open as I drive along!
I have been reading the WIKI, and other threads on the subject, and was preparing for some fairly major remedials, but happened to read somewhere that the grease in the latch mechanism should be fairly light - not axle grease.
So before dismantling anything, I gave the mechanism a couple of snorts of WD40, and what do you know? The latch now works in the proper fully closed position as it should do!
All I have to do now is apply some light grease, as the WD40 is only a temporary fix. RESULT! :ok

Coincidence there as I just had the same issue, and cured it the same way. Must be the cold weather.

An even bigger coincidence as I added a note to bottom of this page last week:

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Bo ... _and_Parts" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

However, (as you say) WD40 is only a water dispelling agent and soon dries out with any initial lubricating properties soon lost. I came across some spray grease in local pound store recently that is more a mix of grease & oil and better suited to the job. You can verify if this is the cause by moving the 'hook' part on the door manually, and seeing how quickly it jumps back. Any delay doesn't allow it to grab the door pin quickly enough and it won't catch - no matter HOW much its slammed in temper. A door that will mostly shut but only if closed slowly but firmly in the Winter is almost certainly down to a sluggish hook.

Had that issue for the last five Winters and was sure it was something to do with door seal being too stiff in cold weather but for sure its lack of lube on the hook assembly. It shuts with a light touch now.

I have some white lithium grease that is for lubricating cycle cables that I am hoping will do the job, but need to make sure I have cleaned out the old grease first.
