Whilst having new wheels fitted I asked the mechanic to replace my rear brakes as they have never been done since I've had the van. But since being done it is not braking as efficiently as previously but having taken it back to the mechanic he says its ok but might be my servo - but this has been checked and is ok.
I have also been told my handbrake rod needs replacing.
It is due for its MOT and I have the rod but is this a simple exchange job that any garage can do or is it a complex 'don't do it unless you understand a T25' job as the wiki was confusing me by talking about drums and adjustments etc! Many Thanks in advance as I don't seem to be able to get any practical help in my area anymore

The Haynes manual quotes that the job should be relatively easy. In reality, I could not get the rod to clear the fuel tank so I ended up pulling the rod as far into the cab as I could then cut it, I did the same under the van. I bought a replacement cable from Brickwerks to replace the rod and fished it through with a piece of wire. The job took no more that an hour. I will recover the cut rod the next time I drop the petrol tank.

What's wrong with the rod, has the thread stripped?
If it has there's an even simpler fix, that costs a few quid and you can do it yourself.
You just need a 6mm stud extender and a 100mm length of 6mm stud.
Simply cut the rod (stripped bit and all), leave enough to attach the extender and fit the new length.
Easy peasy

The rear brakes HAVE to be adjusted at the drum.. not by the rod.
