Just started to strip the engine from my 1.9 WBX to deal with quite a few oil leaks and give it a bit of an overhaul. The engine has done just over 90,000 miles. I changed the coolant nearly 2 years ago when I bought it just to be on the safe side. Looks like the previous owners have looked after it well as when I removed the heads, expecting the worst, the head studs are almost like new. No sign of rust anywhere.

Any pitting on the head mating faces?

No all clear really, I'm very surprised at the condition of the internal parts. Looks like it has had regular oil changes and well maintained. Pistons are all good and even the rings are still within the tolerances.

No pitting means it was changed regularly then, as it's the build up of phosphate that pits the alloy.

Managed to disassemble everything and only snapped one exhaust stud. Heads and crankcase being soda blasted tomorrow along with all the other bits.

Considering it has done 90,000 miles the crankshaft and bearings are still within the allowed tolerances just the camshaft end play that is out so new bearing shells needed. Just goes to show the quality of these engines.

Coolant. Pink stuff.

Coolant colours can vary between manufacturers,needs to be G12, G12+ or G13. If you are unsure when it was last changed drain completely and flush the system through then refill with the correct mixture.
