Does anyone know if you can get a replacement led time clock from anywhere as fitted in the instrument clusters ?

They are the same as the ones fitted to carb equipped Sciroccos, Golfs (early) and Passats (early).
Still rare as hens teeth to find one that hasn’t "bled". Our Scirocco wants one.

Depends how purist you are but you can get brand new LED units in all colours that tell not only time but voltage and outside temperature for under £7. Only three wires involved. They can also be fitted in dashes that never had an LCD clock:

Take your pick:

I've probably asked before, what is involved in replacing the analogue clock with a rev counter? I have a '89 dg and would quite like to fit the tachometer that I bought ages ago.

I've just done exactly that. The membrane you have won't have the connectors for the tacho so you'll either have to improvise or do as I did and source a scrap membane, cut the connector section off and solder accordingly. Chances are, the signal wire for the tacho won't be complete back to front of vehicle either. I ran a new cable and was good to go. Far more use than the analogue clock for sure.

This will help a bit though:

The green wire is the real challenge. It seems that VW only made complete looms where the vehicle had the lot, otherwise you'll find that green line (if it exists beyond the dash) may not be connected along the entire length.

I have a 1989 WBX 1.9 DG and fitted an new dash with a Rev counter. My old dash didn't have have a Rev counter but the green wire was live and worked. Maybe worth testing it before you run a new wire from the coil.

Just a thought.

Vans with buzzer of doom should have wiring for tacho signal already, as it is used in buzzer circuit to stop buzzer triggering below 2000rpm.

Thanks for the info so far. This is not my field of expertise (not sure what is :rofl ), but with my van being an '89 and having a buzzer of doom, am I right in thinking it will be a case of 'plug 'n play' or is there more to it than that? Many thanks.

It may well be as far as the dash but if you don't already have a rev counter you'll need to make up or find a connector for it, plus join to existing loom/membrane.
