Starter motor bush replacement

Hi,
Got a very "lazy" starter motor which only just turns engine over (its been like that since i got the van 15 months ago). The van is used as my main daily transport and has only failed to start once during this time but its always a bit nerve racking at start up time!
So with winter nearly on us i guess its time to try and sort it.
Tried cleaning/replacing conections but still the same so i fitted a second hand starter motor, still no difference. Got the starter motor tested and was told its ok but the guy said its probably the bush in the bellhousing being worn forcing the main shaft of the starter motor to go offset whilst trying to engage with the flywheel (this is apparently quite common on Aircooled vw).
Well i suppose i should have changed it as a matter of course when i rebuilt the engine in August but the question is has anyone changed this bush through the hole left by removing the starter motor or has the engine/gearbox got to be separated?
Keith.
