Hi,

Due to tight fund age at the moment (paying for loadsa welding). Where is the best place to get an exhaust from? I have 2.0 air cooled cu engine. Need the back box and tailpipe. Best price I have seen is about £150 for a 'normal' one - don't want an empi twin tip etc.

Is it best to wait for gsf sale and see what price they can do? I know you're going to say that cheap means re-doing it in a few years but at the moment I need to change it before it's MOT.

It is just a matter of finding the cheapest supplier. Their are only a couple of manufactures of the steel systems both last 5-7 years. Use stainless steel nuts they may still seize but you will still have a nut left to get a spanner to fit and be able to shear the stud off.

The advantage perhaps is that silencers are only £25 a throw then. I've got two spare in case mine ever goes.

I second the bike can mod, I put a brand new GSXR 1000 standard on (fleebay 20 quid) and it sounds fine, I certaintly wouldnt put anything that was loud on, although the can had a 4 bolt fitment a simple mod with the stainless link pipe and away you go, Didnt even have to alter the bracket arrangement, also the rest of the link pipe fitted in the end of the can as a tailpipe. And as the external of the can is aluminium and titanium it doesnt loose its looks. I was tempted to fit the can coming straight out from the knuckle (late DG) as the length fits perfectly, not sure if this would have upset things though so didnt.

Definitely food for thought so thanks. My concern I suppose would be that it may count as a 'mod' for my insurance and cost me more whereas a standard set up wouldn't.

Veewees have a kit back box, tailpipe and fittings for £100? Hmm.

Have you got any pics of the fabrication you needed to do to make it fit Nic as would be great to see how one is fitted on the later link pipe?

Will do, the mod involves welding the flange to the stainless link pipe to make a coupling, if you cant get hold of a tig welder then a stainless electrode does the trick, take some pics later.

This looks like a good way forward, mine is close to needing tlc so I'm going to give this mod a go

On the 2ltr Aircooled and early 1.9DG layout, you need the header (four into one) but later vehicles just need an adapter. I've run like that for a few years and many have done the same since I first put it in the WIKI. You get a moderate performance increase too, not much to write about but it helps.

If the tailpipe rusts away on an OE box, its usually quicker to dump the whole box and fit a bike one (or go fully stainless if you have the funds). That was what prompted me to come up with the kawasaki can idea to be honest. Once you have the header (which easy lasts 10+ years), the cans are cheap as bikers swap to carbon ones so there are loads on ebay.

300CE - would be glad of pics - its what I need to finish that custom exhaust page - or anyone else who has fitted a bike can to the later exhaust.

No worries Ralph - when we spoke previously regarding this i know you mentioned that you needed the info on the later connection type for the wiki so maybe Nic's could be included. Once i've seen how Nic has done his i'll look into getting something adapted.

Heres a picture of the exhaust coupling, not a lot to show but a simple welded pipe with two flanges on, one a four bolt and the other a standard VW 3 bolt, been on the van for about 3 years and never had a problem and as mentioned before it is nice and quiet and hasn`t given any running problems.

Cheers Nic, looks pretty straight forward. Have you got the length of that piece of pipe between the flanges & have you got a pic showing how the exit side looks mate?

Stuck at work for 6 days solid 80 hours worth at the moment but will get a pic up next week, the length of the pipe is not an exact thing as it could have been shorter or longer, think it is about 60mm. The can sits as the standard one nice and level.

No worries at all Nic, appreciate your time on this mate. Just wanted to get a rough idea of where the exit is to determine the size of the pipe, but all good chap as you've now confirmed it.

Sounds like you'll need a trip away in the van after doing all those hours
