Hi All

I'm putting my van in for its MOT next week. I've overhauled the mechanics but am concerned about a hole in the sill.

Basically most of the sill is solid except for an area around the front nearside jacking point, which is rotten. Does anyone have any idea if this would result in a fail?
I intend to sort it properly in the next few months but for now would it be wise to fill and cover in underseal to get throught the MOT?

Immediate fail I would have said and it will be far worse than just what you can see.

Is a quick temporary repair possible to get it through the MOT until I have time to sort properly?
Could a patch be welded over the top?

I would reckon that it will be very bad underneath - look at metalmick8y's posts on this repair. It is far more complicated than just a patch. ( I have done my own but it was nowhere near as bad as that looks)

Its fecked,but you could try hide a patch over it ,its not as of its going to cause a whaeel to fall of but it is a fail ,thong is if that's like that then there will be other horrors

Yep there are deffo other serious issues. Having had the engine, gearbox, and fuel tank out I've been up close and personal with some of the nasties. Just want to get this sorted to get it through the MOT and back on the road. Then I can tackle each one, one at a time.

I've got hold of a mig and plan to practice on some scrap before getting stuck into the van. Looking forward to it with some nervous trepidation!!

Hi all, I'm going to have a good look at the rot tomorrow and assess how bad. Going to remove the kit.chen and see what's lurking behind. I will post pics.

I'm going to bite the bullet and get stuck in with the welding. Was planning on repair panels from Schofields where necessary. As for other repairs where would be the best port of call to buy sheet steel?

I found that I didn't need to buy any sheet metal. By the time I cut off all the old panels, there was plenty of good metal on those that was perfectly ok to reuse.

just google sheet metal works etc in your area .blacksmiths etc,
schofields will do fine for panals, and you can get the other odd ones made

Hi all

Just to update

As a first time welder I managed to weld in a repair section for the inner sill and an outer sill/lower panel repair. Also welded some new steel in above rear jacking point and a lower repair section on the outside.

Also welded some patches in the drivers footwell.

Put it in for its MOT today and it only failed on the wipers and steering rack gaiter. So a job well done.

Just want to say a big thanks to the forum, particularly Metal Mickey, without his step by step photo guides I would have been reluctant to have a go!

I have taken photos and will post them up soon.

I thought the MOT was due in August?

Decided not to go ahead with the MOT in August, just for it to fail. So did all the necessary work first. Took a while to get it all done because (a) I was learning as I went (b) I had other commitments (c) most importantly, I became a Dad for the first time last year. Just pleased it'll be back on the road this weekend after the retest.
