Apologies in advance if this topic has already been covered.

I have an early air cooled T25 with the long sliding door handle. The handle is unlocked, but will not accept a key (I think the previous owner has either broken part of the key off or managed to wedge something in there)

I see a few companies sell replacement barrels, but I cannot see how they are held in. I was expecting to see a pin, grub screw or circlip but nothing obvious - am I missing something ?

And assuming the barrel is in the unlocked position, and it can be removed, will it actually come out without a key ? or am I resigned to having to buy a new one at circa £65 ?

Any help would be appreciated.

pm dan simpson, he sorted mine out, charged me peanuts and did a superb job, can't speak highly enough of him! he's got a pint with his name on if i ever bump into him.

Have a read esp the hallvw link at the top.
Assuming early and late are the same there is a grub screw that hold the inner barrel once you have the handle off give it a good clean. There is a fair chance that your door is no unlocked but the barrel is scored meaning it is unlockable. There is a theoretical repair isint liquid metal to fill in the scoring but I dont know if anyone has been successful at it. Early sliding handles are hard to source.

Hi, thanks for the advise - got a wire brush on the back of the handle and this revealed a small indent (the handle must have been repainted at some point and the screw hole neatly filled up with paint !) after a bit of scrapping with the point of a needle managed to uncover the screw head and then carefully removed it with a small screwdriver.

I then managed to get the barrel out together with the bottom third of a broken key !!

The barrel looks beyond repair, but the inner handle looks in very good condition and undamaged

Any advise on the best place to get a replacement barrel ?

I also need the barrel, early 1983 handle and plastic surround on the outside.

any ideas on where to get it.

I picked up a replacement barrel from JustKampers http://www.justkampers.com/251-843-709- ... -1992.html however I'm also being a bit clueless on seeing how the new one is held in.

I misread the comments on the JK page and interpreted the barrel was held in with just a retaining screw. However with Haines manual in hand I found this just held the actual handle in. The existing barrel was held in place simply with what I can only describe as "gloop". Very tacky kind of stuff and held the existing barrel firmly in place, but does nothing for the new barrel. The new one works great but with nothing holding it in I find pulling out the key pulls out the barrel as well.

Can anyone help me work out how I'm supposed to secure the new barrel?

Without it in front of me, can I suggest that metal strength putty that even £ shops do these days?

If it will hold it in, and won't interfere with the mechanism then 'job done'!
