Identifying a rebuilt engine

I have just dropped the engine (2L air cooled) out of our bus for a bit of TLC. It there any way of telling if it has been rebuild previously? I’m sure I read something about the engine number being modified?
There are also numbers stamped into the crank case next to the breather hose.
Eternally the engine looks rough with a bad oil leak from the cooler (thought it may just be a loose filter but noooo) resulting in oil everywhere. There is also no thermostat. However I popped a rocker cover and it looks way to clean...
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
This is my first engine rebuild for over 20 years .. just like being a teenager again!!
