Just fitted new start motor & fuel pump all was looking good!!. BUT now when I park facing down hill (slight or steep) the fuel does not get to the fuel pump ? . Any ideas on solution & cause appreciated. (I can get van started if I syphon some fuel & prim fuel pump. Thxs

It would help if you told us what engine.

the van is 2ltr petrol.

Then you'll have to wait for a petrol specialist to come along.
Diesels sometimes drain back if the bleed off pipes are perished.

What sort of Petrol - DG, DJ, 2e, etc.

I experienced a similar problem with my 1.9 petrol. I found that someone had fitted a second fuel filter up close to the fuel pump. This filter never fully filled with fuel as the pump was never strong enough to do so. Removing it (and replacing the one close to the fuel tank) solved the problem for me. Hope this helps.

As you say 2ltr petrol, I am going to assume air cooled. Is this new pump a standard one, or have you fitted an aftermarket electric one ?

I ask because some (most) have a one way valve (as part of the way it works) that stops fuel draining back when not running. Maybe your pump does not have this, or it is stuck open by some crud.

"They" do often say not to have another filter (other than the one by the tank) though I am never sure why.

But please note, a fuel filter that is mounted on it's side(ish) can NEVER "fill" with fuel, (regardless of pump efficiency) because as soon as the fuel reaches the outlet pipe, the air in the top of the filter has nowhere to go. If you tilt the filter so the outlet pipe is at the top, the air can escape and your filter will be then full of fuel Not that it makes any (much) difference by the way, except it limits (a little) how much of the actual filter element is "in use".

How much fuel is in your tank and how steep is the hill?

The outlet is right at the back corner of the tank so if you've only got a gallon or so in and the hill is quite steep the fuel mightn't be near the outlet.

@least 3/4 full. & there is a filter aprox 5inches away from tank outlet .which I have disconnected. & fuel runs good out of.

I've got a similar problem -- van up on almost permanent axle stands at rear !-- -- did you get yours sorted and how/what?

Thought had it sorted.but has started same problem!. Have been told could be vacuum problem. Will keep you posted

The push rod inside the pump can wear, causing a weaker pumping effect, from memory 139 mm on the 2.0 litre... worth wiping it out to have a quick look and measuring it. Cheap to replace.
