New engine - seems to run hot...

Hello folks,
I have just had a TES 2.1 DJ recon engine fitted to my bus last week. During this running in phase, the temp gauge is well over to the right, pretty much on the cusp of the fan kicking in all the time (not just in town traffic, but gently coasting down A roads). I know it's been quite hot of late, but is this normal, as I don't remember my last engine running quite so hot (although it was usually to the right of centre)? The temp sender is off the old engine (2.1 the same), but is only a few months old and ordered from Brickwerks so should be the correct one.

Anyone else running hot during these summer months as I really can't think what it could be (the radiator is working and the garage even replaced the water pump, so it can't be that..)

Thanks, as always, Mark

How's the water levels?

Perhaps it needs a bleed again

Remember, the "normal band" of the engine temperature is controlled by two things.

At the bottom end, the thermostat. When the coolant's too cool, this closes, allowing the thermostat to bypass the rad and warm up.
At the upper end, the fan switch. When the coolant's too hit, this turns the fan on, reducing the temp of the coolant heading back to the engine.

If it's sitting just shy of the fan coming on, on a hot day, with the fan cycling gently - that's in the normal band. Nothing to worry about.

It's entirely possible that, with new internals still bedding down, friction in the motor's a bit higher than it was in your old, slack and slappy one. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but will also contribute to heat generation.

Mark...was the van originally a 2.1 (I know you said the old engine was) just that the 1.9's did have a thinner radiator.
Also
I would be tempted to fit a new radiator fan switch, after fitting a new one on mine the fan definitely kicks in lower on the gauge..quite reassuring TBH.

Hi Martin - good to hear from you! It was around 12 months ago we were all in Berlin - Happy times! Thanks for the advice. I think I'll order a new fan switch then for peace of mind.
Cheers Mark
