Syncro gearbox detective work

Following my recent gearbox failure i needed to get a working box back together, so visited Aidan Talbot and shot some video about the process.

For anyone that doesn't know the story, Harriet and i had been visiting friends in Cornwall, just outside Helston on our return journey i initially thought the van had hopped out of gear but when i tried to put it back in gear and put my foot down on the accelerator.......nothing happened except the revs increasing. We had lost all drive in 4th gear.
Took the transmission out of the van the next morning and high tailed it to LLanfyllin to Aidan's workshop to start stripping it down to see what had gone wrong.

Part1 in this series features the beginning of the strip down and an insight into the mysteries that go on inside that heavy, expensive hunk of metal that hangs underneath all our vans.

So, if you're in a nerdy mood, grab a cuppa, sit back and see just how a gearbox comes to pieces.........and hopefully how it goes back together again.... Enjoy!

Good vid! Nice to know/see how it all goes together. Have you managed to track down all the bits needed now?

Yup, the box is back together.

Not back in the van yet as i'm waiting for some welding work to be completed.

More about the building of the box in the next videos. :ok

I had a look at part 2 last night and its even better than part one with loads of interesting extra gearbox info from Aidan. It will be live on the website in a day or two I guess as there is lots of world wide interest in the series 8)

A few people have mentioned how after getting help from http://www.aidantalbot.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; its good to see what he actually looks like and coincidentally looks the same as Daryl Christensen of AA Transaxle, I bet they smell the same

Ahhhh - so your Vlux ! Sorry - bit slow.
You seem very calm in the video. I was quite stressed as Aiden ripped into my gearbox and the estimate hit thousands  Aiden was wise enough to have tea and cake standing by for moral support. (And Sharon and Pete :D )
Looking forward to part 2 good work, I bet there are hundreds of Syncro owners on the edge of their seats.
Cheers
Rich

Great vid :ok as it happens I got to see it in the gearbox in the flesh or should I say bits and pieces. I must say I really felt for AL and Harriet and after getting the blow by blow account from all present it was definately time for pints at the hotel. I alwas found it fascinating to watch Aidan strip down boxes and how much he can tell from doing this it really is an education, well done for getting it on video guys :ok
