T25 rear braks self ajuster NOT self ajusting?.... Just fitted new drums linings and cylinders and handbrake cables to the rear of the T25, why are the self ajusters not ajusting ...all this was done 10 days ago ...What have I done wrong ...any help please

Have you adjusted them up ???? You have to set them first before they will adjust!

I ajusted them up so the linings were just rubbing on the drums

did you set the cable up correctly to?? I do the brake adjusters up tight then back of till just rubbing

as far as I know I did the cables correct.....with them being self ajusting you can only ajust them up so that you can get the drum back on ....thats why I set them so they were just rubbing on the drums

Did you put the return springs on the correct way round? Otherwise they jam the adjuster.

Right you need to fit the hub then with either the proper adjuster tool, or a screw driver adjust them up via one of the bolt holes till tight then back till just rubbing and try um

No holes in my backplates or front of the drums, to put screw driver in to ajust

should be in the backing plate, sorry no holes in drum forgot, work on that many motors!

As James has said...here is the adjusting hole in the backplate....as BigHerb said, NOTE* the way the top springs are fitted as these can easily be the WRONG WAY AROUND and interfering with the mechanism.

Also: even though these are 'CALLED' automatic adjusters, you initially MANUALLY adjust them after refitting (adjust until tight, un-adjust until free with two further clicks for expansion clearance) handbrake cable slack to start with.

thanks for all the info ,will have a look for the hole in the backplate in the morning....(If its not RAINING) thanks m8

3 Holes....two outters are there to check shoes lining thickness, the third (SEE ARROW) for adjusting mechanism....

Click/Click/Click noise when tightening (adjust UP) the shoes.

Bong/Bong/Bong noise when loosening (Slackening the shoes off)...this is because you are going against the adjuster (adjusting againsts the ratchet)

You don't need to.

When we sorted our rear brakes out in Sarran last year, we did no pre-adjustment. At first, they were a bag of carp. But they quickly sorted 'emselves out, and were bob-on quickly.

The thing to remember is that they only "self-adjust" when the handbrake's on AND you press the brake pedal, as with most other self-adjusters. Have a look, and visualise everything in motion, and it'll become clear how and why they work. The real key is to make sure that nothing's fouling, and that the thread and ratchet are clean and well copaslipped.

That third hole is for backing the adjuster off, if there's a lip on the drum that it can't/won't get past.

As both Martin and Me are timed served Mechanics we must have been getting it wrong then for years!!! Oh and Martin was a fully qualified VW tech!
