Damn Lock

Hi Folks, Good Day all
I have a 1984 Holdsworth 1.9 petrol camper, and the tail gate lock has decided to cease working. I have done the usual things oil etc, keys rocking backward & forward, he barrel turns but will not let me press the button to open.
Does anybody know if I can get the lock off from the inside with the tailgate locked and if so how do I get off please.
If anyone has a spare lock/ barrel that I could purchase with keys I would appreciate or point me in the direction of supplier it does not have to be new.
I have been onto Just Kampers and the ones they have their are from 1985 so not sure if this is the same model.

if it's the same as mine '81, you'll need to get the tailgate open to remove the lock. To do so you'll need to remove panel etc, and find the lever that the lock connects to and pull it towards you.

Thanks for the replies to Bilson & covkid. do I take the inside panel off with the tailgate locked from the inside?
Any ideas where I can get a replacement as well

Many Thanks Bilson, my lock is a push button one with no other handle,so to open the tailgate you turn the key and push where the key goes in , is this the same type as their appears a hole above on your photo.
Anyway many thanks for your assistance, I am a little green on the in,s and outs of these van.

No worries, the photograph is of inside the tailgate, and that hole is what the screw that holds the lock in place goes through (my lock's been removed in the photo). You can only get to this screw (need an allen key to loosen/tighten roughly 8 maybe 10mm?) when the tailgate is open. All you need to do is find this lever from inside, and pull it towards you, once open it should also push closed and remain locked.

Many Thanks Bilson,I see you too have had problems with this lock in the forum history. I will have at go at acessing this, do you think that the lock would be able to get working or should I disregard and get a replacement?

It's good timing that I've been sorting mine out.I've not had any trouble with the lock itself, so can't really say, but it sounds like it may be best to get a replacement. It may also be worth doing that before you try and get it open, just incase. If I were you I'd remove the inner panel when you've got a few minutes just to familiarise yourself with what's going on inside. Then it will soon all make sense.

I'll check tomorrow to see if the tailgate will remain locked if opened from inside + faulty lock, I think as long as the lock remains in the locked possition, it should shut + stay locked. This may allow you to remove the barrel and see if anything can be done with it, but what you obviously don't want is a lock stuck in an open possition.

With the tailgate lock removed the tailgate can be opened using your finger. There is no way of locking it with the barrel removed.

Basically all the lock does is push on to a spring loaded plate that releases the catch.

Once you have the door card off the inside of the tailgate you can see how the barrel works and once the barrel is off (3 allen screws) you can disassemble it

If need be customandcommercial sell the early tailgate lock but it isn't cheap

You could then disassemble the new lock barrel and your old lock barrel and re-key the new lock barrel to the old key

Chances are though, it won't be a barrel problem but wear in the lever mech.

Many Thanks for the replies guys, I will have a go at the weekend, as I do not get home until late. I will access the lock as suggested via the inside and hopefully get to the beast. I am staggered at the cost of this little replacement still, I suppose it is getting on a bit!

Problem is that early locks are now NLA from VW so you are paying a premium for an aftermarket version.

Easiest fix is to take the lock off. Disassemble the barrel, remove the segments (mate a not of the order they are in) then get a new lock, disassemble that and then match the segments up in the same order as the old one. You may need to use some of the segments from the old lock barrel
