Can't start the van now - stalling 1.9DG 1984 - FIXED!

Hi, we have been having trouble with our van. Was ok on long motorway run but lost power and stalled when slowed down and we couldn't restart. We called out greenflag, they cleaned carb and got going again, only to stop again down the road and had to be towed home. Cleaned carb again and seemed ok for a bit, got through MOT and then started stalling again. Have changed petrol filter (not blocked), fitted new fuel pump, recent distributor and HT leads, recent plugs (but showing slight signs of white deposits), recent petrol tank. Now we have broken down yards from home so cant get a tow as don't have homestart. Tried cleaning carb again but no joy, will start but just dies again straight away.

Would welcome any ideas, at least if we can get him going again enough to limp home or to a garage (or far enough away to get a tow!).

We are just outside Petersfield Hampshire, only moved here recently so would also welcome any recommendations for garages locally please. We did take him in to one garage end of last week but they couldn't identify or fix the problem.

Hope someone can help us please.

There's a small filter In the brass inlet pipe of the carb, not saying its the problem but worth cleaning out, have a look this on the Wiki, bottom of the page. Hope uk you get it sorted

coulld be an air leak
check your vacuum lines
brake servo hose (commonly rot under the braid)
vac lines from the carb
choke pull down unit diaphragm punctured
gaskets

Not an expert at these things but gaining experience rapidly.

On mine the fuel pump actuator rod had worn down and was therefore not pumping enough fuel. I then broke the fuel pump by fitting the wrong actuator. Anyway point of story --- the AA man had a hand squeezy pump which he fitted between the broken pump and the carb, pumped a few times and off the van went for 100yds. He said if there had been two of me that we could have got home hand pumping.

So to the point - if you think its a fuel thing I suggest you get a new pump rod (a couple of quid) and see if that works .

Regards

Also worth a mention, if your exhaust is blowing this can cause stalling, and starting problems. I found this out the other week.

Recent fuel tank:- what are the state of the fuel lines like? I recently replaced all mine because when I had the tank out whilst doing some welding work I noticed that some of the lines were some sort of white reinforced nylon stuff that had begun to break up and block the filter. I never had any misfire issues though sometimes it was difficult to start - hot or cold - which I can only assume was down to the dodgy lines. Not had any issues since I put proper lines back on. Oh, and check the little inlet filter on the carb - assuming its a Pierburg - as thse often get overlooked and block up and starve the engine of fuel. Lastly, if you do change the fuel lines, use proper clips and not jubilee clips. :ok

Thanks all, we had been focusing on a possible fuel supply problem so will check out all the suggestions over next few days and fingers crossed. Will let you know how we get on.

We did look for the fuel filter on the carb in the right place by the wiki diagram before posting on here but we cant find one, could it have been removed?

also worth a mention is the fuel filter, the vw fitted on situated right next to the tank, i would check right along the line to see if anyone has fitted an extra one. this is common and can cause similar symptoms. good luck. we had a similar symptoms ago.t was crap going into the carb, at first i couldnt find where from i even ran it from a separate tank as i suspected the tank was rotten, then i noticed oily residue in the carb. what was happening was the breather from the oil tower was sending bits of carbonated oil into the carb as it was so cruddy. cleaned it out and never had the problem again.

have you run some fuel off the tank to see if its coming out clean, if its milky there will be water in it which.......doesnt burn. again on our old van this happened, the filter acted as a water trap so the water was held there until there was just too much and it began to run over and up to the carb. again very similar symptoms, clean the carb fine, a little while later it would stop. we discovered is as the van had had a good wash just before this started and the pronblem was a split pipe behind the petrol cap that had let water in.....as fritz he'll remember this one, we arrived at vanfest at 11.55 just before the shut the gates having intended to set off at 10 and get there by MIDDAY

And the winner is ...

Woody49 (Sorry no prize available but you do get the pleasure of being right and my gratitude)

The fuel pump rod had worn down by about 2mm, new one in and running ok now. Phew. Got him over to Doug's Werks ok today for full check up and getting some nice new fuel pipes fitted too.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Janine
