Blower fan does not work now in my 1981 T25

Hello T25 fans

My heater/blower fan as stopped working when I turn the dial to any of the one of three settings that is on the dial.

Has any one had this before. Is the most common fault the switch...or is it more worryingly the fan its self!!

Hope some one can help.

Jason :ok

Most likely cause in a seized fan. Lots of info about it on here if you use the search feature. It can often be fixed by freeing and oiling the bearings. Failing that they don't cost a lot to replace. The downside is it's a bit of a job because you need to totally remove the dashboard to get at it.

I would test that you have power to and from the switch and rule that out before anything else.

I will check on the volatges on the switch first when i get her back from the spary shop next Tuesday...hopefully its just a dodgy switch and not the fan

Cheers

And there was me thinking Aircooled vans didn't have a blower fan.

They do, but like the human appendix it used to perform a purpose a long long long time ago

Some of them do, depending on the base model of the van. Mine was a Bus and had a blower. :ok

When it worked it was not great but at least it moved a little warm air around and take off the chills from the many drafts :)

My fan stopped working and it was the switch. I got one off an old polo and it fits fine. This is the second time the switch failed. I don't know if air cooled are the same. I checked the blower by taking the wires out the switch and holding them together. Dark wire is live. Variations on yellow are higher and lower power. Dave

Second time because you haven't actually fixed the fault. A replacement switch will often bring things back to life again but the underlying problem is that the motor is old and partially seized causing excessive amp draw which....as you've found out, will just melt the switch again, blow the fuse or stop working altogether.

The excessive draw from these motors when they reach retirement is another reason why trying to un-seize them with WD40 rarely solves the problem either. Yes you might be able to free it off but you'd probably need a 75amp fuse just to keep it going :rofl

do not use WD40 on any electrical motor, it contains silicon, which turns to glass like nastyness with heat and friction.
better to use a pure oil based substance, like duck oil or even servisol electrical contact fluid on the actual electrical part of the motor....
