Doing a bit of an assessment of my gear linkages. Changes arent too bad, but I wanted to know what state it was in anyway. Thought I'd share the pics with you all, as I know how much you like to see dirty bits
Not sure I've seen any pictures of this exact setup before.. probably means its ancient and all the parts are unobtainable knowing my luck..

You can't really see, but every bit of rubber in this picture is in pieces.

Lots of pics of the gear linkage in the WIKI as well as where to get the parts. Have a read:

Its 5-speed specific but little difference to a 4-speed. Good pics though. We love em

I notice the pics on the wiki also don't have the bellows either side of the rear bush setup - is that normal then?

The bellows are on the actual cup which attaches to gearbox lever. Not unusual for them to go missing, grit gets in and then the two part company. Mind you, mine have been held together with cable ties for two years.

I've got the one attached to the cup (though its knackered). The ones I'm wondering about are the two black ones either side of the sliding bush in this pic:
I dont have those at all and neither does mm289 by the looks of things. They are pictured alongside my setup on ETKA though

Hi,
I suggest you buy these two black belows and fit them in. It is not a hard job, just mark really good the position of the spline in the middle of the gear linkage since that will be the part that you will be taking out to change the belows. And since you are there it is a good thing to change the rubber protecting the bearing coming from the gearbox (the one you had in a pic and said that it is in pieces). All of these rubbers prevent dirt from mixing with the grease of the bushes. Dirt and grease will create a weird mixture that eventually will destroy the bushes.
cheers.

Just out of interest where do you get replacement parts?
Are they still available through vw europarts? I'll be changing Mine come summer.

Look up, I posted links to the WIKI article for the 5-speed. The gear lever kit is similar and fits together the same way.

A tip for fitting the repair kit: When you unscrew the ring keeping the old push-down spring in place, dont let it hit you in the head

These parts are also available from VW itself, so you can still buy the original ones. I always check first the local VW dealership (since I am ok with paying a bit more to keep the OEM quality) and then I check websites.
