The AFN unit out of a Passat will give you 110 bhp. Thats what VW say it will give you. Putting an AFN in a T3 will not guarantee you 110 BHP because the installation is different - ie different intercooling and different distances between the intercooler and inlet manifold. It will make a difference, how much you wont know till you put it on a rolling road.

I'm going to rolling road mine when it's back. Costs about £40 for a run.

I wouldn't have thought what VW, Subaru, Volvo, or any other manufacturer would guarantee any of the engines in a Syncro install to perform to the maximum. One thing is for sure though, the fairly (in our life time) recent development of the TDI engine sh!ts all over the entering level Syncro engine or Volvo engine for power. You can do things with an "E" TDI though that can get you what you want?

Even if i get a 1Z (seem to be the lowest mileage cars???) a first stage remap gets you 130bhp. Want it done now!! 60mph up hills

greenlaning on tickover, none of this revving the nutz of it or riding the clutch

i know mines not a syncro...but my ahu...without a c.cooler...and with a modified 5th pulls like a train in my westy.
3rd , 4th are effortless.
just out of my street there is a really steep bank that i had to tackle in 1st with my jx...( you know how it goes 2nd to tall...1st over revving...other cars right up your a***.)...now my van pulls up it in 3rd gear accelerating all the way.
it pulls from 30 ish in 5th very strongly.
its like chalk and cheese....and my jx was a good one.

Well yes indeed they wouldnt but many people do quote those figures incorrectly. Diesel engines have developed hugely since I were a lad! God bless electronics and micro tolerance engineering! On the other hand electronics can be a total pain in the ass cuz when it breaks your buggered.
When I was in university one of the lecturers 'predicted' that we would never see the 'ultimate' of 100bhp per litre from a normally aspirated engine! It was in the mid 70's though when a calculator cost 2 weeks wages and the only car diesel engines we knew about were BMC 1.5 litre! My fate as 'an Irish buffoon' was sealed the day I predicted that we would be all driving around in cars the size of a Jaguar XJ6 powered by diesel engines - things were a lot simpler in those days before political correctness! Anyway, he's dead and I have a diesel engined car sitting on my driveway the size of a 70's Jaguar XJ6

How long will your gearbox last with 130 BHP and all the torque that will come with it. There is a guy over here on the VW forums with a 220bhp 1Z engined Golf. It shreds gearboxes, CV joints and driveshafts, is as reliable as the weather forecast and smokes like a trooper. There was a thread up with pics of the dyno results. As for green laning if you rev the nuts and ride the clutch then you are doing it wrong !

I can defiantly see your point of view on this Andrew and used to think that. In fact I have spoken in length with loads of people who do expeditions in 4x4's (not just Syncros). I totally agree with what you are saying on a standard engine, but if you have a custom built mechanical built pump who is going to fix that?If one has one fitted and goes breasticles up while driving further than down the shops and a "E" TDI can be plugged into with our gizmo that costs £20 and you can see what your engine is doing 24H a day and if something is going to go or not quite right, you take it to any garage in the world to get fixed rather than wait 3 months for your custom pump to be built. Also your engine will be adjusting to altitude, temperature etc giving you the best MPG on the roads you drive? I have driven hundreds of miles behind MTDI's over fueling bellowing out black smoke before and that must be money lost right?
I am no expert though and only a plasterer so might have got the wrong end of the stick

Yeah I agree but Im not a huge fan of custom built MTDi's either for the reasons you give but you stand a better chance of fixing something mechanical than something electronic - well I would anyway. To my mind if the electronics go, then they go, end of. If the mechanicals go then there are more people out there able to fix it.
You're right to say what you have about the "E" TDi and when working they are the muts nuts but with an old JX you knew that if it doesnt go then there is no fuel and if there was a bang and it doesnt go then you broke it!

spare mdti pump, bracket and cable aint going to take a lot of room up in the spares box. e goes ape "pooh" just pop the spare pump on and drive out smoking. you`d have to do the same if a mtdi or even a td system completely failed

My sisters TDI and a few other jeeps were messed up due to dirty diesel how much areAFN injectors? Also a 1z putts out 90 bhp with an intercooler how much would it be without the intercooling 75-80? Much the same as an AAZ? Chargecool an Aaz and get about 90-100bhp ? Plus you don't have to spend the money on a gearbox rebuild engine mounts a modified loom reprogrammed ecu loom which probably more than compensates for the extra MPG a tdi produces!
