Yes, it's a big old lump of metal that's for sure, prob. not much different than having a winch there, and at least that's useful
Been half thinking of a front mount spare myself , but with a mount directly through the front panel. Everybody I've asked says there's not much if any affect on cooling, but I'd not think ti a good idea on a TD diesel.

However, noticed today that the spare isn't the same type of tyre as the others and I guess it really ought to be for a syncro.

In the 14 months I have owned my 2.1 16" Syncro it has averaged 20.6 mpg. It's not great but I love the engine and it's not my main car.

An honest to goodness figure, I don't think my 2.1 did much different to that... My 1.9 diesel Syncro has averaged 23.5, if I slow down (a bit) on long runs in summer I might get 28-30, give and take in winter (& having a bit of fun), then 20 mpg.

PeteM told me at the weekend he definitely gets 20 or maybe a tad more from his 3.3 Subaru Syncro 16 (which isn't light!) and he likes to cover distance quickly - it seems to go just about anywhere in top gear without snatching, even 10-15 mph right-angled bends. Dread to think what'd happen if your foot slipped onto the loud pedal in G-Gear

My lowly 1.9 dg wbx does between 20 and 24 mpg generally.. even sitting on the motorway at 4000 rpm... (closer to 24 then...)
Go LPG if its a problem...

My Saab 2.0 that I've just sold only managed 24mpg around Cornish lanes (a few more mpg on longer trips) - so 20 mpg is fine with me

Just done a trip up through Holland and Amsterdam

2381km and 287.14 litres = 23.4 mpg and 1479 miles.

2 adults 2 large children high top and loaded to burst, cruising at anywhere between 100 and 130kmh. 97 super unleaded.

Mmm, I know an early Saab Turbo that returned 16.5 mpg over 375 miles 18 years ago - but then it did 'average' over 98 mph point to point (minus time stopped refilling). 300 M-way miles & 75 Aroads.
Unfortunately, I cannot recall who the driver was
But I know the figures are accurate to a minute or so in time and a litre or two in fuel

Well it was flat

We had 26.8 mpg heading North with a strong tail wind sitting at 120kmh.

Not so good coming back into a headwind.

Used 500mls of oil though, engine now 12500 miles old, but running synthetic.

Rings need bedding in with some real welly sessions on mineral oil then


1500 miles per pint approx

A bit better than the factory figure for a (classic) Cooper 'S' - driven hard, 180 miles per pint (nice sloppy piston clearances)

I bought a 1.9 petrol in the end. It seems not too bad on a long run, on the way to Santa Pod it only used 1/4 of a tank. Around town or off road it is none too clever though.

Abit more info for ya.............

2.1 pop-top syncro.
285 miles = 63 litres
145 miles towing 1 ton caravan into massive head-wind (having to drive down hills)
All on A' roads.

My maths, that works out at 21 ish MPG.

Even if you factor in the 10% the speedo is out it still sucks. Goes great though.
