ideas wanted: cheap way to heat my van through winter please

Hi

I have a CARVER SB1800 came with the van and its ACE.

I have recently got another one with a thermostat from Ebay for £30 plan to swap them over.

This thread is over a year old but thought i'd fill you guys in on what i did.....

I brought a SB1800 for £10....

I've fitted it in the same place as in the photo above. (only place with enough floor room. Also gives a good storage hole behind

. I've had to make my own casing for it as the one i got was right handed control only and that would make the foot plate in the wrong place and stick out the door!

My only problem now is... Its too darn hot!

After 20 mins on its about 40C in the van

I'm hoping cooler weather will make it more bearable

Bargain, they really do belt out the heat.

Keep and eye on ebay, the thermostatic ons come up now and again. They make all the Difference set the dial and forget.

And they don't flatten the battery!!

Does yours have the thermostat?

I'd have thought it would cut down to minimum at a set level due to the did theromstat bulb below the valve but all setting seem to be maxinum...

Can't wait till its snowing

Hi blue

The one in the photo is the standard one.

My "new" one has the thermostat. Much the same as with little box and what looks like a phone cable that plugs into the heater. will take some photos at the weekend. Battery has never been an issue, do loads of wild camping and its alwas on this time of year.

Think the bulb is a safty cut out will check the manual.

A = could someone tell us (me) what type of heater this is and roughly how it works ?

What i ment is that there is a copper thermocouple style unit on the outside of the gas valve that looks like a bulb. I thought it cut the flame down at a set heat once hot (like an electronic thermostat) but it makes more sence being a safty cut off.

I'll keep an eye out for the one with a thermostat.

Ah so from the above clarification (thanks Blue

) we can deduce it is a gas heater

Next question = I take it it gives off fumes ?

Yes it's gas. Have a look at this link from Willoughby (ta!)

The whole thing is basicly an exaust system with fins....

It heats air which travels around the pipework giving off heat via the fins and is then vented under the van.. No fumes inside, no noise, no flat battery

Only downside is the size as its as big as an oil filld radiator and plumbed through a 4x 6 inch hole in the floor..

I missed this thread earlier otherwise you could have looked at my installation first - I'm in Mansfield too and followed Willoughby's idea with a Carver SB1800 (mine cost £20!).

It works a treat though, and with that and a set of window insulation from JK, my daughter & her BF stayed toasty right through New Year in Derbyshire last year. Shouldn't get too hot turned down to Min (but note the regulator turns the "wrong" way - look closely at the knob!)

Good timing bringing this back to the top

Tried it for the 1st real go over the weekend.

Had it on for an hour them turned it to pilot light. That was enough to keep us just right through the night in just a quilt

Bonfire meet next week looks a whole lot warmer than last year
