Great thread and Wiki guide. Just been reading with interest as I've just bought my first bus (having owned a Beetle for several years). She looks pretty solid but is a horrible poo brown colour. Respraying is just not financially an option but now I've read this I'm definately gonna give rollering a go. I especially like the idea of being able to dig out future rust spots and then re-paint. Brilliant! Think I'll run her as is for the winter then make a start in the spring. Will post pictures of my progress when I get started.

Yes household paint remover (Nitomos?) or equivalent should be fine.

Beetle yes - nice to work on and you can unbolt a lot of it.


Discovered an amazing way to speed up flatting paint thats also very affordable. Use 400 grade (wet) to smooth high points off. A little washing up liquid in water helps.

Next use ordinary CIF (formerly JIF) to achieve a smoother but matt surface which also removes any scratches from wet & dry. Finish with polishing compound (even brasso!) and wax if you wish. Had a week off and been experimenting with different things. CIF is damned good believe it or not. Its basically a medium cutting compound! Quite cheap if you get it in the bigger containers. Got a great finish doing that and not a sign of orange peel.

Just took delivery of a tin of Ral 5002 Ultramarine Rustolium.

Just a little darker than what is on now, So I will do the inside now, and outside next spring.

Since I was unable to go to Vanfest this year I decided to use my time wisely. So all day I have been sanding , filling , the Van in preparation for rollering the van with Rustoleum in the next week . I'm going for a two tone look like Beach Bums below

So today Ive been sanding like a mad man. Particularly difficult was sanding the bottom of the doors which had dodgy vinyl stickers which had welded themselves to the van and had to be got off with a belt sander the rest I used a palm sander..still plenty to do

best ways to get stickers off its with a knife/scraper and a hairdryer to melt the glue.

After much welding,filling,sanding got round to putting a couple of coats on bottom half of van yesterday.First ever attempt at using a spray gun and I`m well chuffed with it.The paint is good stuff as it almost put itself on.All work done on front yard where you see the van i.e outdoors.Paint for top half (white again) should arrive monday,so I`m praying for another good weekend next week.Now for the obligatory before and after pics:

Rusty bits were confined mainly to the sill/arch area.There is a bit of crustiness on the rail the track cover mounts to but nothing serious.I`ll see to that when I paint the top half.As for the colour it is just described as "blue" if you look on http://www.rustoleum.co.uk/colourselect/1/19 its the 3rd one down(in the drop down box).As i said its the first spray job I`ve ever done,it was a budget gun and compressor too so if I can do it and get a reasonable finish then anyone can ! I will admit to more than one or two runs but in my defence I was rushing to get another coat on before the temperature dropped.As Covkid has said before the beauty of this paint is that you can do a bit when you have time,leave it a week or even three and come back to it with no ill effect.I`m really impressed with the stuff so much so I bore everybody silly telling them about it
