Couldnt I widen the steels to 7 or 7.5j without running the risk of fouling the arches? I'll be running a 40mm lift kit, which should give me even more clearance...

OK ...... that Tristar looks the part alright and those wheels are 8 x 16 Penta's. The minimum tyre size that BFG recommend for an AT or MT on that size rim is 255/70/16. That is 4 INCHES bigger on diameter than the standard 14" tyre.

If you want 7" x 15" rims then buy a set of Mercedes 15" rims from a W126 SE class. They are the right ET for a Syncro and bolt straight on. The minimum tyre size that BFG recommend for an AT or MT on that size rim is 215/75/15. That is only 2 inches bigger on diameter than the standard 14" tyre. Another option is a 235/75 size

With a lift kit you will get away without fouling the body on the 15" rims but I suspect you might not with the 16" rims. When you start to go off road thats when you will start to foul the bodywork

Like the others have said ...... do what you like with your Syncro, its yours and its your money. All you need to do is think that if no one else has done it ......

be interested to know how he`s managed to get those wheels and tyres on without arch mods. those are the wheels i got for the doka with 245/70/16 and it needs arch mods.

I bet that tramlines something awful on tarmac! Never mind the tyre rolling around on the rim in corners
I suppose if you put a stack of aftermarket bumpstops on the damper rods it wouldn't foul the arches, but then the tyres would become the suspension! A bit like a badly-done, excessively lowered 2wd bus

As has been said, what looks cool, doesn't always drive well.
My lowered 2wd Rat looks cool but I live in dread of road repairs & drains!!

OK clearly that's no no then.

The ones BJ put on are 15s but not sure what merc they came from.

The latter presumably a little more for the diesels? If I went 235 would I definitely need the lift kit to avoid contact?

Its up to you really but most of us here are on 15's of some sort. There are also some of us here on Merc ML 16's

16" is very popular in Germany but usually in conjunction with a lift kit.

In answer to my contradictions - on my third T25 diesel now and both the others had an original jx engines. My current one had had the diesel upgraded before I got her (and I am still patching up a somewhat dubious install that`s now much better). I know its a contradiction to say purest with exceptiong of the engine - but the facts are the jx is gutless and its impractical on a modern motorway now not to be able to go 65+ without risking your engine disintegrating. So you are right - I am a purest for everything BUT the engine/gearbox....... if you see what I mean

Mate, I'm all for mods! Intentions will vary like the British weather with any vehicle; I want to drive mine and have fun, whereas someone else might wrap this 1/23 Tristar in cotton wool.
