I cannot get on with stringing in windows. Tried several times and failed.
I have used this method several times, on the side windows, with no problems. Numerous glass fitters have told me that this type of rubber (Claytonrite) is not meant to be strung in. Windscreen and rear window -string in.
Seals Direct also recommend this method.

That guide says sealant. What sealant did you use?
and did you take any steps to prevent yourself from dropping the glass?
If you are ordering seals from seals direct the trim tool is avaiable for a tenner.
Withe the amount of pushing / shoving / swearing that goes on I have no idea how you could ever install these with sealant - it would just go everywhere. Plus, with the trim strip back in there is a seal so tight against the glass and bodywork I don't see how water could get in (might be famous last words!!)
Agree that fitting is easiest done without string except for the louvre winodw - as you cannot get to the rear of the seal at all I found that the string was good just to pull the seal out in the right direction.

I suppose in theory you don't need sealant but I put some in anyway. I used a silicone sealant that I had handy and I put that in the groove that sits on the metal. If you don't put too much in it shouldn't squeeze out.
I didn't use any glass holding appliance. Never thought about it. Good idea if you have something. I start by putting the glass in the rubber at the bottom corner and as far along as it will go and then ease the other bottom corner in.Then one hand on the glass and the other hand using the 'tool' to work the rubber over the glass. Work from the centre out, up each side a bit at a time and finish at the top. Its a question of sliding the rubber over the glass rather than levering the glass in. Put the tool between glass and rubber and slide it towards the point where the rubber needs to be fitted.
Makes it a bit messy but it helps if you use something like KY jelly, not too much.

Thanks Kev- will try that - found the pump-its very quiet..(looks new and says on it quiet running) I don't think its a bad connection as it is whirring very slighly...but will tap it. Previous owner says its relitavely new.. wonder if theres a microswitch on the tap valve as it just does,nt sound or look like it will provide water? So I will tap it and perhaps have a go at pouring water down fromthe tap to the motor in case it needs priming as you suggest... thanks for the advice.Everything else(touch wood seems good-we are going to scout the vw events to gauge how best to improve it... will recover seats and perhaps buy an awning..but after doing some research as its very clean so no rush. Hope we get a good summer!

hey great thread guys, not been around in a while but my autosleeper is still serving the family well. lpg conversion a year or two ago was a good move too - although it used some of the storage space up...
i have a bit of a problem with my '85 model - the carpet type stuff that is used to cover the walls and ceiling in the interior is very old now and drops loads of fibres every time it is touched. no amount of vacuuming it seems to help. i need to either spray / paint it with something that will somehow consolidate it or cover it all up with something else like canvass. has anyone had and solved this problem? does the hitop take staples from a staple gun without ruining it???
One option I can think of
I had a problem with the rear D pillar carpet dropping off.
I removed it and replaced it with Vinyl covering from Dunelm mill, slipped a little thin foam under it to "pad it out"

Your carpet is passed its sell by date. It's a question of replace with 'like' or as Kev says something else.
I get my carpet from Mark at Megavanmats, very helpful.
I don't think I would risk putting staples in the hightop.
