Indeedy. Basically I put together a solution for someone with really limited funds but you can certainly get better materials if you shop around.

Just a throw in here. My rustoleum has been on over a year now and I'm just going round touching up areas that may need extra paint and identifying any spots that need a good digging out and investigating. It is a LOT easier to do follow up work in this way as it all blends in nicely. Not regretted it yet. :D

Only the front and back need there final coats now!

Could anyone confirm the process for buffing, i dont think this is covered in that much detail (if it is sorry if i missed it!).

I have bought a buffer like this:
Image
and some farecla G3. With the buffer i got a fine cotton-like pad and a much more shaggy/fluffy pad.

I have never buffered before but this is what i was thinking of doing.
1) flat the van back with 600 grade and finish with 1000 grade
2) Apply the farecla G3 to the cotton like pad and begin to work in a cross hatch an area at a time (from seam to seam)
3) Once the abrasive buffering has been done do i switch to the fluffy pad and apply a wax? And if this part is right is there a reccomended wax?

3 questions on this:
1) Would a hot or cold day be best for this?
2) Do i need to wipe of the G3 before i apply the wax?
3) How do i know when to stop sanding with the G3?

Hope someone can help with this, thanks as always! I really really hope the paint buffers to a nice shine! I'd imagine its all in the flatting back so may do a side a day.

Thanks for all your help guys, I have made notes. :)

Unfortunately, spending the weekend on it may be on hold, cos we're having a new kitchen, which is coming sooner than expected !!!! and the old pantry has to be knocked out and walls plastered etc. We've never done any of that before either, so steep learning curve coming up. Yikes! :?

I'll keep you posted, may get some time this evening to do something, if it doesn't Pee down, looking very dark out there.

Thanks again.

Nasty stripes - very light work with a blow lamp. Original thread I can't find either now - think its lost for good since site was moved. The link was on page one of this thread but had no joy locating it even changing URL slightly. However, WIKI covers the basics and plenty of specialist sites out there on preparing for painting.

Not specifically with Rustoleum. Really you're kinda branching into an area where the paint used is less relevant and certainly beyond the scope of a WIKI article. If I had any suggestion, it would be to trawl YouTube and sites which specifically cover using an electric buffer for tips and suggestions.

I do recall a guy buffing a motorcycle tank that was painted in rustoleum but I think buffing is quite a skill that you can only really learn by getting stuck in. You'd do better to follow the many videos around that cover that. Likewise following instructions provided with the cutting agent.

Cheers mate! I saw that motorbike being rustoleumed too, seem to remember it turned out pretty well. I'm glad i now know there nothing non-specific to this paint to consider. I'll follow the best generic guide i can find. Thanks!

Slowly rollering my van and was looking at ordering some Rustoleum to do the bumpers, but by chance Home Base now stock Rustoleum spray cans - not the cheapest but convenient. They do some really small spray cans of enamel in basic colours which could be useful.

As I said, slowly making progress on my van. One side and front done, passenger and rear to do. Just hate the prep but love THE rollering, so long as THE roller head doesn't fall on THE floor fully laoded!

May eventually post a before and after if I ever finish it. It's been 6 months so far - the kids take up a load of time. The vans my daily driver so its THE full wash, rub, wash, dry and paint, hoping the mizzle (heavy mist in the west country) doesn't turn up as you start to apply paint!
It's only money....
