VC could go out of balance, even without throwing a weight (pretty unlikely) but if it blows a seal or bursts, maybe that's what had happened to Russel's one...

Engine torsional harmonic damper pulley - which one are you using Pete?

Keep going back to engine & crankshaft harmonics, have you got a spare crankshaft pulley damper for that engine? Would be worth trying that in case the present one is going hard or delaminating.

BTW - Anyone got a spare JX one

So prop is off but the front diff is still being driven by the road wheels (as Russel implied) so may still be the source? Does this vibration peak at this indicated rpm in every gear or is it related to road speed?

I think these aren't always as discrete as one might think or ecen hope.. whilst I know my mirror shake is due to hammering engine pulses around 2000 rpm/40mph in top, it is as good as unnoticeable in 3rd even at full bore...

so although its a question i would ask also, we should be careful about any conclusions drawm

So, after a day out fishing!
Aidan now has another gearbox on his shelf for rebuild, hopefully this will be the last time as 3 times should be enough to make sure averything is fine.
So, my suspiscions where correct, the previous gearbox casing refurb has failed thus allowing the main bearing to fail. It does appear that some debris has gotten caught up and done some other damage despite yearly oil changes.
In the last rebuild some things where changed and some things weren't - I shall look at the box of bits tomoz and see what wasn't put in as today has been rather long.
So after 30k miles, previous rebuilds not being done correctly and used on a particuarly torquey engines and heavy off road use,
= vibration and tinkles are gearbox issues

Not really, but the gearlinkage ball is knackered and the gear change shaft is worn - so in the context of 'camp' fire speak...
