Right, took it for a short run after bleeding twice (the cooling system not me ) and she overheats- like 80% of the temperature guage unless I whack the heating on full. Fan appears to make no odds (even using chicken switch) so I suspect the water isn't getting there when it should do. Faulty thermostat and its not circulating properly?

Also had a couple of 'fettling' issues with the dizzy and stopped to check her over. Fortunately 1664 and Mercdoctor passed me on their way to some sercret VW location and I ended up with the loan of a spare dizzy, rotor and cap (thank you lads!) which got me home. Took me an hour to do 5 miles though.

Otherwise it runs fine.

9. Just pay someone else to do it - its a horrible, nasty, contemptuous job and there will be plenty of moments when you'll contemplate removing the engine in desperation or even suicide. Its not nice.

I'd be a bit happier if it wasn't overheating. With rad cold on a run, and even when engine is hot, I can't bleed from rad, I can only conclude it must be a faulty/stuck thermostat. I have a spare which I know runs cool so will swap for that one in the morning. If temp still high then, I'll look elsewhere. With a new waterpump it should be all working fine now and I must have it for work next week. Sick to death of trains....

OK, I'm foxed. Changed thermostat for known good one. Ran engine and go through bleed sequence but not getting any water from rad bleed screw. Engine temperature will just continue to rise if I leave it. Ideas?

Hakuna suggests I'm not giving it enough revs to carry water to rad - so having another go....

Hi, I know the 'bleeding' process has been done to death but; have you tried getting the front a fair bit higher than the back while bleeding? I can do this pretty easily due to where I park and it does make a bit of difference.

Roger that. Hakuna was right right anyway - not giving it enough revs. Ran it like that for quite a while and got most of the air out. Will bleed again later and possibly tomorrow but at last rad gets nice and hot and cools down if I flick the chicken switch. I think the thermo switch may have cooked during the overheat as its not kicking in like it used to so I'll get another but I'm only going short distances this week and I do have the chicken switch.

Never struggled like this on bleeding the system but perhaps a few extra revs was all that was needed. Wedged a brick on the throttle and tried to ignore it while all the neighbours curtains twitched....

You're right about giving it some beans. I find a crooklock can be wedged nicely in place. Hope you've got it sorted.

Just an add on; a very old tip was to put a bit of washing up liquid in the coolant, the idea being to turn the air into froth that is easier to carry around the system to the bleed point. Never had to recourse to this but if it's b*llocks then it sounds like good b*llocks.

I don't know what all the fuss has been about. According to my Haynes Manual, those bolts should undo quite easily. Did you use the right sized spanner?

Right, latest. Bled it, took it out for ten miles in increasing circles around Nuneaton (so initially I wouldn't be far from home), then when I got out as far as the A444, I booted it all the way home. Temperature nice and cool - below midway anyway and that was just windpower through the rad - didn't get hot enough for the fan. I think the rad switch may have given up due to the overheat (doesn't kick in on its own) so will pick one up over next few days. I've got the chicken switch until then if it does get warm in traffic.

Sorted. Theres a slight irregularity like a very minor misfire but nothing to write home about. Noone else would notice it but I do. A good service may sort that with luck. Perhaps an extra bleed too - just to make sure.
