Why would you take a retrograde step? Any dizzy can be reconned to keep what should be there.

Electronic ignition is light years ahead of poxy points.....

I used the one out of a cj engine i stripped down as the two electronic ones i have for my cu engine both packed up. Points and condensor are peanuts next to the price of replacement hall unit etc and i dont mind checking/ reseting them if need be every 3000 miles.

I agree points are simple but the op seems to require reliability more than the option to adjust imho hence the question why the backward step. The hall effect system is as simple as electronic ignition gets! You wouldn't fit points to a new golf for simplicity would you? You'd use the best and most reliable option.

well, the van went back to the garage, who ran an air leak test, all fine, but it was running low on Carbon monoxide, leading them to think that it wasn't burning fuel. So they said ''go and get the carbs cleaned up first'. I had a decent replaceent dual vac dizzy, but they weren't convinced that this would make a difference! So they had adjusted something on the carbs. It still needed a little foot to the throttle for a day or two whilst idling at traffic lights. Now however, it has 'settled ' down, and is idling normally!!??? so may be some crap in the carbs has now cleaned out of the system!!? I still wnat to take it to an Aircooled specialist to check it is running ok, as I don't want fuel starvation to overheat a head and drop a valve!!

Hello,

Sorry, been busy organising welding this week end.. 8)

Re SVDA.. I fit this to eliminate the Hall effect system, and its 30+ year old wiring.. and the damper on the single carb setups...

009 is not the way to go.. advance curves for the SVDA bay dizzy work fine for me..

But hey, there is no obligation to go 'the full retro'... :)

There are plenty of SVDA electronic dizzies.. so no points to mantain...

I have used 'Simon BBC' on a well known auction site, very helpful, and sells the better class of repro.

Coming back to your low CO reading......

This can be that your timing is 'out'.. so loss of power, poor idle, crap acceleration and all the rest..

Re watch the video, I've tried to make it clear how to set up the ignition timing

or that the mixture was set a bit lean to get through the MOT..

which can make the heads run hot.... (and I'll bet they haven’t been torqued up recently)

Do you have any figures for the CO readings :?: :?: .. a print out off the CO analyser.. photo it and post please..

Nowadays 3.8% at 1500 rpm is about as good as you'll get with a worn engine...

And believe it or not......8 - 10 % under acceleration...

Carbs pollute.. :( :(

I cannot comment on the aftermarket carbs setup.... other than :loads seen, very few set up right.. you need 2 hours on a 'rolling road' with full instrumentation, and a full range of jets and spares...

Usually worth the investment, for the fuel saving alone..

Cordialement,

:ok
