I have just spent a couple of hours this morning going over the rear brakes. I'd say pleasant but at least the sun is shining...Slight lip on the drums (turned off in 5 mins) and thankfully nice flat braking surface and loads of meat on the linings. That'll save a few bob then!

Re-greased the adjusters and slacked off the compensator, nothing siezed. Hey presto one 3-click handbrake and a nice short pedal again

Well that didn't last very long. It's been driven around all over the place since getting it T&T to give the syncro (and me) a rest. I was feeling well chuffed...

Then the old ignition fault reared it's ugly head after popping out to our fabricator's a few miles away. Having arrived in the lashing rain and dashed into the workshop, I went out, started up and stalled it turning round in the yard
Then it was forklift tow-time...I went there at 11am, I've just got back after attempting wiring investigation/repairs/rework in the barn for 4 hours hours while trying to dry out.

All the wiring checks out with a multimeter, so maybe the ecu has gone bits up after all (or the main cpu is getting twitchy, like PC's when they get old and lock up.

Bollox!

Time to look seriously into a dual map Megasquirt v.3 system and pick up some mpg as well as reliability on either fuel

P.S. one odd symptom is that the alternator charge warning light won't go out when it goes wrong. Anyone ever experienced a regulator fault the upsets the ecu because of over (or under) voltage?

The sun is shining (even if it is chucking filly out there) so I waited for temps to get the right side of zero then went and got stuck in once again.
On Russel's advice I had a look inside the bulkhead multiplug as they have been known to get corroded pins, thankfully all OK:

The outside of the plug is not so clever, looks like it may have been partly glued together in the past, the reason I couldn't separate it before now:

The locking collar is definitely the worse for wear, I can just about make out a 1H0...part number (Golf?)


I've never liked the look of the loom across the bulkhead as it was all taped up. It had been opened up before, due to a massive short-out/meltdown. This was the engine side of the multiplug:

So it was time to be brave and unwrap the lot:

I was looking for a bad repair in the coil feeds or maybe the engine speed signal, but within the first stretch from where the loom tucks under the firewall I found an earth wire with a split right round it's insulation. As I inspected the cracked insulation it parted company! After consulting the wiring diagram, it was only the ECU main earth! One butt connector, crimp, crimp, plug it all back together and...
Crank crank Vroom Rev rev rev all happy again. It did object to going over onto lpg first time though, well it was stone cold and freezing...

Its usually the way mate, but at least now you know your Syncros wiring better

If only...the syncro is another kettle of fish and far more reliable. Clockwork in comparison!

Thanks. I can only make out the first bit of the part number as it's well mangled. Everything on this bus is familiar to someone with an 80's Audi or VW, just not usually all on the same vehicle!

It's been round the block this avo, having re-bound the loom and generally faffed about with shrink sleeving and cable ties etc. making it all tidy again.

It had two numbers on it-identical apart from second to last digit ?!?!?!?

Have got part number for the pins somewhere but cheaper to buy them from VWP or similar.

It got me to work, which is a start. The idle's a bit woolly but I don't think the SA fuel maps cover sub-zero temps...

Plug comes c/w locking collar, on my doorstep for less than £20 so not too bad but it's on a back order. Next week if I'm lucky. I ordered a new heater blower switch too as that's just about jiggered (893 959 511 and fits loads of the smaller Audi's up to 2000MY) That'll be loads of fun to fit

Prob telling you to suck eggs Ian, but of they tell you they have now gone obsolete can prob get one from a breaker for free and 30 mins with terminal removal tool- et voila!
