We stayed on the camping municipale rather than the aire (got a bit worried we might find another dutchman trying to manoeuvre a 30ft caravan round a 90 degree angle) - but good job we booked as they turned the woman in front of us away! (can book online) Fabulous site right on the river side and Metz itself is beautiful as Ian says. Very historical and well worth a couple of days' stay if you are in that direction. Great drive down from there to the Black Forest - lovely countryside and very pretty villages.

TBH i wouldnt describe Metz as being in the north east. Im thinking the Picardie area, a bit ordinary compared to most of the rest.
