It's more expensive to travel from Fishguard/Pembroke, SW Wales, than Holyhead, NW Wales. All quotes are coming in ~£230 mark. Sailing mid-week might bring in down by a tenner or so each way.

Anyone found a cheaper ticket for us Southerners?

I think its probably the same timewise to go from holyhead to dublin from the south as it is to go to fishguard and probably a lot cheaper

Mat, what did you do to get this price, apart from 10% off coupon and cheaper sailing times? Are you telling them your vehicle is a '4x4 over 1.8m high'? Choosing 'motorhome' pushes the return price up by nearly £100, regardless of route.

Well, the cheapest option is a bicycle, so that's not very helpful advice. I'm after specific details please.

I do know that Roger was stung for extra cash at the port coming back from Germany as they re-classified his vehicle before he boarded. I'd rather get it correct now, than fret about it on the day and have possible budgeting issues.

Patrick - I'm pricing up our crossings to Ireland in August, and noticed that there was a fastboat from Fishguard to Roslare, but places were sold out for camper/motorhome. There was space for Cars/MPV/4x4 - so I got in touch with Stenna and told them I had a VW camper, with roof rack that was over 2.2m, and would this classify as a MPV. They told me no, that I was to book as a motorhome!

BTW - it's approx £320 return in August on either Irish Ferrries or Stenna for the routes into Roslare.

Just rang Stena Line who said their definition of a motorhome is if it has a bed in the back it's a motorhome, even if it's the same size as the category "Car, MPV, 4x4 over 1.8m high".

So sounds like all our campers are in the "motorhome/minibus to 6m long" category, and those with panel vans are in the "van (transit type) under 6m long" category.

Both appear to have the same price and are more expensive by ~£100 than the "Car, MPV, 4x4 over 1.8m high" category.

I always go 'Car, MPV, 4x4 OVER 1.8m high' and have never had any issues but mine is a tin top, doesnt have a high roof or a pop top. At this size of vehicle they just need to know if you are going upstairs or downstairs on the boat. Remember its a 4x4 primarily, camper second! At the end of the day its your shout.

Good point Andrew - a tintop multivan isnt a camper, but an MPV.

Have always gone as 4x4, mpv over 1.8m with never any problems mine is 2.3m hightop panel van but looking at it one would say it's a camper think save does the same and over the last two years must have been over in the Uk at least 10 times
