The silencer welds came apart on the end of the nearside joint; got the replacement from GSF and it is good quality. The K&N filter that was in there was replaced with another as it had started to split apart at one corner; that filter had done the full Americas trip with Stewart; I cleaned it from time to time but felt the leakage needed fixing. I toyed with the idea of sending the broken filter back to K&N under their lifetime guarantee !

The g12 is noticeably pink in the coolant reservoir.

RED or PINK Vw Antifreeze:
Make sure you use the correct color VW antifreeze! Vw models manufactured in 1997-on use this red or pink antifreeze. The part numbers are G012A8D and ZVw 237 G12. This G12 VV antifreeze is still available from us, but when our current stock is depleted it'll be replaced by the below G 012 A8F G12+ purple antifreeze. This pink and the below purple VW antifreeze are interchangeable and can be mixed. However, this antifreeze should not be mixed with blue or green colored antifreeze. Dealer prices are often for a pre-mixed bottle of antifreeze. Our prices reflect a concentrated 1.5L bottle, meaning more for your money.

==============Under this line is 'below' ============== Over it is 'above' ===================== :wink:

PURPLE Vw Coolant:
Make sure you use the correct color Vw coolant! This coolant cannot be mixed with blue or green colored Vw coolant. VW models began using this purple coolant in 2003. The different part numbers are G 012 A8FM, G 012 A8F A1, or G 012 A8F A4. This Vw coolant has recently been introduced as a replacement (and is the same as) for the earlier red or pink G 012A8D Vw coolant. The purple and above pink Vw coolant are interchangeable and can be mixed. This is the updated G12+ VW coolant. Dealer prices are often for a pre-mixed bottle of coolant. Our prices reflect a concentrated 1.5L bottle, meaning more for your money.

Above is all a quote, this line and below is me speaking

Read Violet for Purple, but not pink or red ?

Obviously this whole colour thing by VW is bananas (yellow....

usually! ~ unless it's old then it's probably going black)

So, the Wiki entry appears to be correct? Another quote seemingly from VW...

Please talk to your lawyer before responding :D

I'd toy with the idea of doing a 'Pete' and seeing if MPG goes up even more! :lol:

Just to add to this already excellent info.

On VWs there are 3 types of coolant available which you can use in your mk2

G11 = BLUE coolant used pre 1997
G12 = RED/PINK coolant used post 1997

THESE DO NOT MIX
G12++ = PURPLE - THIS CAN BE MIXED WITH RED G12 but NOT G11.

Im running g12++ at the moment and i got it from here

Re: Heat and efficiency ... update.

Post by Mudlark »

Almost a year on thought i'd give a little feedback on what i believe was a very simple problem.

I had thought the air flow meter (MAF/AFM) on the van was a recent one but turns out it was old. So fitted a new one and all symptoms of overheating/no power/low boost are gone. Van has its mojo back ! Simple as that.

Had a lovely weekend in West Wales at the beginning of June with van driving lovely although have seen the MPG figures drop from the previously reported 28mpg back down to 25mpg !

My understanding is that a faulty MAF was most likely causing underfuelling, making engine work harder, giving higher temperatures especially on hills and skewing the fuel figures.

Sometimes it really is the bleeding obvious stuff!

Mmm.. well, at least you've nailed it Mark.
Presume you saying it had wrong MAF fitted

Whether the theory matches the practice on cooling, power & economy though, v.hard 2 say :wink:
