Re: Electric P.A.S.
For those of you who don’t know me or much about my work, a quick introduction.
I have been in the business of repairing, restoring and customising VW’s since the 1980’s. I have built many magazine featured and show winning vehicles for customers. All of which were air cooled, and all in need of vast amounts of welding. As I got older and tiered with the amount of welding and fabrication needed just to keep the old air cooled stuff on the road, and I’ve owned quite a few (inc a highly modified 1957 oval window beetle which was the first UK beetle to be running Porsche 4 pot callipers all round on Porsche vented discs, several split screen buses and bay windows) I decided to get involved with the VW T3 scene.
A VW model with far less rust, a better drive and water-cooled with a good heater (more comfort)
This opened up the chance to have some fun and build in some products to make the VW T3 an even more enjoyable vehicle to drive.
My first T3 was bought already fitted with a Porsche 911- 2.7 engine and gearbox, but lacked in the stopping power needed for this amount of horse power on standard brakes.
So I set about producing a rear disc brake kit to eliminate the brake fade that I was getting from the rear drum brakes. The product worked well and was offered for sale to the public. The kit has been a great success with both the 2 and 4 wheel drive market that it has now been copied by 2 companies that I know of, one here in the UK and another in Germany.
Due to the running costs of the Porsche bus, I sold it and went about building myself a better bus. This is an orange, twin sliding door model that I also fitted with the factory sliding sunroof, 200-horse power V6 turbo engine and gearbox from the Rena ult Alpine GTA. And Yes you have guessed it, I chose to upgraded the brakes (this time front and rear) The bus now drives like a scalded cat, but it still needed to have an element of comfort adding.
This came about by way of fitting electric power assisted steering, (epas) (a concept that has been around for many years).
What makes my system stand out is that:
It was the first system available for sale to the public. Released at Van West 09
It is also the only system for sale that is truly road speed sensitive, (meaning that you have maximum assistance at low speed, while retaining the firmer steering at high speed).
It comes with an affordable price ticket of £395.
This item is offered as an enhancement to comfort and this is a job it does very well.
The system is built to a very high quality, with no risk of any part of the column becoming uncoupled from the steering rack while driving.
I was surprised to see a power steering kit available from VW sub, as Barry was in fact one of my power steering customers. His product seems to have less to offer with a much bigger price tag. When you buy a kit form someone who has done all of the groundwork for you, at least make it better Barry.
Some lead where others follow! (Make your own mind up on that one)
As stated before, this is not the first time my products have been copied, but I do take it as a complement not an insult.
At the time of righting, I believe that this is still the only kit offered with the vehicle road speed sensor.
I have read on some of the forums that there are people who have concerns about the safety for the driver of VW T3’s fitted with electric power assisted steering in the event of a head on collision.
I think that you are missing the point. This is much like fitting different wheels, wheel adaptors, suspension lowering ,engine conversions etc.
If you are a safe driver and conform to the rules of the road, then fitting this kit will only enhance your driving pleasure, if you choose to drive like a mad man, expect to get badly hurt in ANY motor vehicle involved in a head on, NOT JUST IN A T3.
You need to ask yourself the question WHY do I drive an old classic.
If you had the budget, would you rather have a 5 star Euro ncap people carrier?
Or do you like the nostalgia of owning a piece of motoring history that you can enjoy the freedom to modify in a country where this is still possible.
Make an informed choice.
If you wish to reduce the risk to yourself and others, I suggest that you sell your old classic and buy a Ren ault Espace, or at the very least upgrade your brakes and give your self a better chance of stopping before you have a head on.
If you enjoy your old classic, embrace it while you can (I’m sure that they will all fall victim to some form of scrapage scheme at some point in the future), and modify it, to make it as much fun to own as possible.
Also make sure that you have an agreed value insurance policy with all modifications listed. I was given a measly £800 payout on a stolen multi van because that was the book value on an old bus. My current van has an agreed value insurance where all items and mean all items are listed, even down to having opening ¼ windows. If my van gets destroyed or stolen I want to claim for the whole package.
Power steering kits are available to those who want to enhance the drive of their old bus from:
Ultimate-engineering.co.uk
For the alternative, Renault people carriers are available from all good car dealers.

Tell that to the muppet that pulls out in front of you and gives you 0.0001 seconds to stop.
Will your PAS still snap like VWs column was made it too?
WHY do I drive an old classic.
Because I cant afford a modern campervan (and I would not touch a T5 VW)

Re: Electric P.A.S.
Can any of you manufacturers be it Tim, Richard or Barry tell me if your Electric Power Steering product has any Ministry of Transport approval or accreditation, is it CE marked? does it carry an British Standard or International Standard marking and have you got any product liability insurance, if I am going to fit an aftermarket product such as this with safety in mind to my Customers vehicles it would be nice to know that the product has been fully tested and is approved as an aftermarket product for this vehicle.
All very well telling your insurance that you have done these modifications until something goes wrong, be it the product fault or accidental, the insurance assessor will require certificated proof that these modifications have some form of approval, we have been down this road many times and all of our equipment meets an international standard 67-R01 for the type of product we supply and retrofit or Brtitish standrd PVE/019 for leisure products
Please do not tell me that you are marketing and selling a product that could affect the safety and stability of a vehicle weighing nearly 2 tons without any form of testing and approval.

This is quite upsetting, thought us VW nuts were meant to stick togeather.
Anyways i just wanted to add my 10p, since i feel i can comment on this topic.
I'm one of Barrys customers, he fitted a 2.5 Subaru engine into my T25 Carravelle, and done a fantastic job.
But i also have one of his powersteering units, which i fitted my self, and for the money i am very impressed. Everything feels well made, all the parts have been well designed. It does exactly what i wanted it todo, add that one thing that was missing from making my T25 a pleasure to drive, and it has, nice light steering with a great feel to it.
Now even tho there are some valid points in terms of the safety of the powersteering and there designs, its not really somthing that concerns me as much as the fact that when driving my vehicle, my legs are a foot away from the front of the vehicle! Its seems that driving a 30 year old vehicle, at speed higher than they were ever designed to do, and fitting powerful Subaru engines is'nt much of a concern on here, but a small part of the steering column, which lets face it, ain't gonna help in a motorway accident! IMO of cause, as of cause safety and reliablity are a key feature in any product design.
Best thing to do, would be to get some vehciles togeather, fit each different type of powersteering, and do a review of each, simple and straight to the point.
More than happy with all the work vwsub has done for me, will always recomend there services.
( Some might have seen my bus at Vanfest, was the yellow one with the 50" Plasma in the back playing a DVD )
This van was on show with up rated back brakes Subaru 2.5 and electronic power steering which I will say is our own.
The steering witch was purchased from Tim was only 6 weeks ago.
I bought a steering from Tim because I thought he was selling our steering I was very pleased to see the designs was totally different I have to day spoke to Tim and I have explained to him the misunderstanding and apologised to him the air is cleared and I would like to say ultimate engineering and vwsub both have the right to market there products and should not be penalised if you want to buy products to upgrade you bus then so be it! Enough with all the bad comments!

Re: Electric P.A.S.
You website says and with all its spelling mistakes (in bold)
"The flexible knuckle which is at the bottom of the column is of a solid construction not hollow, fitted with a High tensile steel rod that is desighned to snap the knuckle on impact and stop the Colum moving forward however this has not been tested and is based on a desighn from a leading manufacture the rod also makes the joint stronger than the original T25 unit."
So its not type tested, but its based on another manufactures design.
That will not help you in court is someone sued you.

agree eatcustard.
I would expect someone who did all design and research to built unit properly to have the same quality in description and spelling on website.
And we still have no answer as to offical approval of any of the products.
