Update,
I've just spoken to Steve at Gassure whom serviced the carb last year and he remembered my van.
He is a really helpful chap and helped me to understand my dilemma regarding the dizzy being on incorrectly.
It would appear that when the vans engine was reconditioned the distributor drive must have been replaced incorrectly on the teeth by 90 degrees, therefore making the dizzy and cap ninety degrees out of line.
This is not a problem now that I have sorted out the firing order and will mark it accordingly.
The carb was put back together with some sort of sealant on the gaskets prior to Steve giving it the refurb, therefore when he refurbed it he did his best to get rid of all the bits of incorrect sealant floating about but warned me that there may be more in there, that was impossible to remove all at once.
The over fuel issue may be due to the jets being slightly blocked by some of this gunk.
My next job is to blow air through the jets to clean them out and this May sort out the over fuel issue, leading to black spark plugs.
I can now rest easy that I'm not insane.
Many thanks for all your help.
