Update,

I've just spoken to Steve at Gassure whom serviced the carb last year and he remembered my van.
He is a really helpful chap and helped me to understand my dilemma regarding the dizzy being on incorrectly.

It would appear that when the vans engine was reconditioned the distributor drive must have been replaced incorrectly on the teeth by 90 degrees, therefore making the dizzy and cap ninety degrees out of line.

This is not a problem now that I have sorted out the firing order and will mark it accordingly.

The carb was put back together with some sort of sealant on the gaskets prior to Steve giving it the refurb, therefore when he refurbed it he did his best to get rid of all the bits of incorrect sealant floating about but warned me that there may be more in there, that was impossible to remove all at once.

The over fuel issue may be due to the jets being slightly blocked by some of this gunk.

My next job is to blow air through the jets to clean them out and this May sort out the over fuel issue, leading to black spark plugs.

I can now rest easy that I'm not insane.

Many thanks for all your help.

Now running OK but dizzy seems to be 90 degrees out !!

OK, a small amount of oil in the housing is not uncommon. As long as you are not having to top it up too often, ie, it's using oil at a rate that is unacceptable, then that should not be a worry. Just keep an eye on that oil level. If you have to use the Elite warranty (which I have heard is quite good) then that will be important.

What is more worrying is how it can be 90 degrees out as it is located either "correct" or 180 degrees out by that peg.

Whilst I have re-built one WBX engine (7 or 8 years ago) I did not go into the motor as far as the camshaft and dizzy drive system but I have a funny feeling...

We need someone to come along who knows the insides of these engines better come on in folks !

May I make a suggestion =

Go to your fist post and E D I T the subject line to summat like Now running OK but dizzy seems to be 90 degrees out !! (like I have done on this reply) so that when it appears in the "recent posts" listing, engine experts will be tempted to have a look at it.

Mind you, if it is now firing smoothly and not making any funny noises, it may well be that this anomaly is not important or a big issue :)

My last posting "crossed" your last one

Ah, Steve to the rescue :ok

At least he has confirmed what I was thinking re the set up of the dizzy drive gear.

And you don't have to worry either :ok

Hey, and your "apparent" confusion was pretty well justified too :)

What is the part number on the side of the dizzie? I'm not sure but if a dizzie from a different engine has been fitted that might explain why it looks like its out by 90'. It should be:

DG - Pre '85 0 237 024 011

Don't think it will be that our boxy, I reckon Gasure Steve has hit the nail on the head, Elite making a a bit of an assembly error ;)
