Despite not having inlet temps I have been informed by Sharon and pete that they were getting inlet temps of about 20- 30 degrees Celsius on a similar set up. Regards to cost and hassle of set up the biggest hassle I had was routing of feeds to and from the turbo to cooler to manifold putting the rad upfront and connecting up some hose was no big deal and would consider it a lot easier than cutting holes out of the van and trying to seal things in but that's just me. Hope it goes well for you Andrew but still think you should go charge cooler route considering you have all the parts and wouldn't cost you anything

I cant get my water temp above 73 degrees....so maybe the charge cooler efficiency does lower engine temp overall.

I had the same issue Keith. You need to replace your thermostat. Mine now sits at 92c and intake temps don't go above low 40's even when really trying.

You thought of standing the rear light cluster off the body?
I've done that on mine and made little scoops in the rear quarters

Same stat for afn and ahu. I couldn't get one from VW plus they wanted nearly £30!

Bought one from GSF for about a £5. I tested it in a pan of water with a thermometer and it opened at 87c. Been in for over 6 months and still provides correct temp.

Any chance of a pic of the light cluster Fin? It sounds like it might be worth doing that if it's easy - it sounds like a similar mod helped for baxter.
I like the air scoops - although I must admit I can't figure out where original starts and scoop stops (is the whole arch and rear qtr extended?) - its got me a bit like one of those mathematical drawings that plays with perspective!

Your oil temp is running too low! Should be around 100 C.

Can't comment in detail but I can say that if paul has the set up he listed above on his AAZ sika then I was very impressed, rugged and felt powerful compared to my Jx's. I know we were only hacking about off road but still it was a nice ride engine wise.

Coolant temp and the stat for it have nothing to do with intake air temps....also intake sit should not be overcooled as too cold and the air won't be to keen on lighting....30-40 degrees c sounds about right...maintained at full load even when stationary ( stuck in the "pooh") ideally for as long as possible.

Oil temps ideally about 100 degrees so contaminants don't build up....max of 130 degrees....TDIs run cool and even my AAZ runs far to cold with a 84c stat fitted with no intercooling at all....cold diesel engines are less efficient and thick oil takes more effort to pump...

I'll get one of the light cluster today - I just used longer screws and made alloy spacers out of some tube

TOTALLY AGREE.

Coolant temperature - nothing to do with inter/charge coolers. Ideal coolant temps are high 80's to low 90's.
Oil temperature - nothing to do with inter/charge coolers. Ideal oil temps are 95C to 110C on a diesel using a 'proper' oil

This whole thread highlights that most of the information posted is based on really technical terms such as 'worthless', 'rubbish', 'much better', 'great', hearsay and unqualified opinion amongst others. Just because someone has done something different and says its great does not mean it is!

syncropaddy wrote: To proove if it works at all will be simple - run the van with it off and run the van with it on. The conclusions will be simple. Then the two questions will be answered.

Q. Does the intercooler work or make any difference?
A. Yes/no (delete which ever is not applicable)
Q. Which is better, a charge cooler or an intercooler?
A. I dont know but I fitted an intercooler cuz it was cheaper and has less to go wrong

You can fit all the gauges and get all the readings you like but if you dont know what they mean or what to do with them, why bother?
