Hi folks - me again. Time for an update.

well, got up this morning, and headed towards the van with soapy (used washing up liquid) warm water and some 1000 grade wet and dry paper. Wow - amazing change! I did one area - the rear quarter - just to test how easy and whether worth doing (must admit, thought we had to do it after every coat  ) It was - really!!! It went smooth - I am talking same as a car smooth. And it didn't really take too long - we went round the whole van (two of us) and it took less than an hour.

Did it take the shine off......thought it had at first.....and wondered what happened with the final coat.....but then as it dried, realised it was covered in white-ish dust....once that was removed....it was fine and dandy again.

So, mixed more paint. using 20% mix or thereabouts thinners. Very scientific.....4 small pots of paint (plastic yoghurt pot dipped in paint pot) followed by one of thinner. Then mix. Folded the paint in rather than vigourous stirring. Note for beginners. If you put the thinner on top of the paint.....it does take quite a while to get it mixed properly.....keep at it...You will know when its ready, as it looks like paint again, rather than a mixture!

Put a new roller on the LONG handle (only coz that's the one poundland had!) and this time spent longer dunking and rolling the roller on the tray before applying to the van. Reduced bubbles this time...but also used LIGHTER pressure. What I did....lots of little strokes to get the paint on, then a very gentle long (length of panel) strokes to even the paint, remove any lines, and reduce bubbles. Press too hard, and you will mark the paint you have put on, and put lines in it.

The second coat has improved the colour.....here's some pictures for you:

Image
Note: this photo makes the door look top class with just two coats!! It lies!!! It is still patchy....but a definite improvement on the first!

Image
You can see the orange peel effect....it will stay like this till next weekend now, to have a full week to get hard.

Image
outside in the sunshine....can see that she is still blotchy but looking better!

Image And up close so you can see just how bad she still is.....but you can see the potential and the shine!!

And one last one.....again, it makes it look better than it is in reality, but it sure is motivational

It has been hard work this weekend...but the worst of it was the prep of the bodywork. Without this, it would have been quite easy.

ohh - just a quick word on the foam brushes. Personally, I am finding these rather awkward. I cannot get on with the flat ones at al.....they just seem to drag the paint. However, i then located one that was mounted like a lolly on a stick, and it was just wide enough to paint the recesed centre line. that worked ok. Got to find another one of them....or use a brush.

Thanks for the kind words CovKid....hope my work is doing the paint justice! I am well chuffed with it.....I walked past it in the garage, and had to do a double take...it looked sooooo different. My best friend thought I bought a new van!

will update with flatting and third coat if the weather allows next weekend. No garage then...so fingers crossed for a nice day!!!

Looking fab em
That really looks close to the original vw orange?
Its a shame some of the piccys havnt posted properly but im sure youll show us some more anywayz :D

Dunno how perfect you want the van but if your not that bothered maybe orange peel in orange paint might look different and interesting?

not saying aim for it but if it happens

could look interesting cuz all the orange vans ive seen are round headlight versions, anyhooz methinks its fab!!!!

By The Way as Cov Kid said and i quote
"women are generally very good at this kind of work, partly because their brains are so much better at multitasking, and because they like things 'just right'. I'm saying this because I was a college lecturer (different subject) for a few years and the lasses always stuck the course and turned out better work as well as being more enthusiastic. The orange head gear is living proof."

i have to agree my other half would just be happy if the result was ok?
Im a bit of a perfectionist and wont settle till its just right

Hi everyone,

Your van is coming on nicely there Em, the new colour is much better.

I've got my second coat on the top half of mine and it is looking a lot better this time. I just wanted to be clear on one thing if anyone can help me.

After the final coat, what do I use to get rid of the orange peel effect? I can't seem to find a definite answer to this, but it seems people are suggesting you sand back after the final coat with 1000 grade Wet & Dry. Wouldn't this leave scratch marks? I'd like to cut it back and get a nice shine on it. Don't professionals use a kind of buffing machine? Isn't that what a cut and polish is?

Cheers

I'm now about to start the bodywork prep.. I need lots of filler ;) Really looking forward to getting the transformation underway!

Good to hear that the white paint is very white, thats exactly what I'm after!

Would love to put pics on ermie, waiting for my daughter to down load them for me, but to be quite honest on the pics it looks better than it does in reality. I found it better to lay the paint off with a real quality brush thus leaving no orange peel, and this in turn was so much easier to flat back. If you decide to give it a go it's better if there is two of you as you must lay it off straight away or you will get a dragging effect. we will try and get some pics on later.

after the final coat with 1000 grade Wet & Dry. Wouldn't this leave scratch marks?

Not if W&D used properly wet, the paper kept wet and not allowed to 'block' with paint, just one drop of Fairy Liquid in't water helps. Discard paper if it blocks up before it 'tears' at your paint, have a bristle nail brush or similar in water bucket to scrub paint out of paper

A slight 'dry' mattness will cut back with buffer, but proper good* orange peel needs paper, sometimes less than 1000 even... Rolls Royce use this method (did, anyway) coat after coat (16 sometimes)

Use a proper rubber block for large flat surfaces and don't 'scrub' at it, keep working unidirectionally, horizontal usually being easiest and the minute scratches then won't show (they merge, being in one direction). Be particular how you hold the block, allow it to deform in one plane to match the contour but not the other, it won't 'shape' to the contour unless you help it a little. Black is the worst to show scratches!

*Orange peel is usually glossy, so is a double-edged sword, you don't really want it, but certainly when spraying, it doesn't occur when paint is hitting surface too dry, or drying too fast after hitting it (bloom)
