Too true you two... very fun old things and easy to get annoyed with. We've always said here, to guarantee noiseless and vibration free ops, everything has to be perfect.

Lots of cancellations and additions ++ and --

Pray for cancellations

silverbullet wrote:It does make me wonder why SDP/VW didn't spec a damped tube for the prop, like some manufacturers in the mid-80's were. It rings like a bell because it's a plain tube, surely a rubber-bonded tube-in-tube would have been loads better ...... with a "plug-in" splined connection to the rear of the Getrag gearbox and U/J's each end. Even a lined/internally insulated tube would be better.

When a UJ failed on my old Tristar's prop some years ago i took it to our local prop rebuilder who pretty much said the same thing. Very uncomplimentary about the design of the original so said he would build me a proper 'cush' drive.

Tube in tube; rubber dampened, splined connection, UJs both ends. It was quite a neat peace of work, was quiet and gave no problems while i had the van.

It did cost a fair bit more than what a refurb of the original was costing; and it did feature grease nipples so was a maintenance item too. Whether it is a better design for less vibration over the short or long term I cannot say. I just tend to go with the recommendations of £xperts
