Just a re cap ... after a silly quote from a garage i decided to muster enough confidence and get at it, well all i can say is (i wish i was wealthy ). I dug the remnants out of the recess with a stanley knife as it was the only thing thin enough to get into it.
However theres no way seal is going in that recess the thickness of the seal to the gap even after running the engine to let it get hot hoping expansion of recess may help.
Tomorrow will be round two

Thanks Ian, il just keep my fingers crossed that it was only due to general wear of the seal otherwise your advise for saving up for something worse will be very useful indeed.
I believe i have got it all out Kev, i can only get a stanley blade tip in the recess to a depth of 4mm all round? seems about right. Il go over it all again tomorrow to make sure, just out of interest to both Ian and yourself what impliment did you's use to get the old seal out?

Why i asked about the implements is because im concerned as to the width i have of the recess and thought this would help me ascertain if all is as it should be
Thanks

IIRC a long, thin bladed screwdriver (possibly slightly bent) levered against the end of the crankshaft and the back of the outer face of the seal.

that gives me food for thought as i attempted to use a small electrical screw driver (0.8mm) and it was not having it, this was even after getting most of it out with the stanley blade. Thanks Ian, il have another go tomorrow (fingers crossed)

i was basically scraping the plastic coating off the old seal, in the belief that the metal part was integral to the crankcase
and once the old seal fell out literally of its own accord due to it being scraped clean of its plastic coating i realised a job which should have taken 20mins had just progressed to hours of messing about Grrr.
We live and learn by our own stupidity
