I agree with Aidan get rid of the rest of the start system by getting a length of wire fit a spade terminal to one end fit it to the start solenoid then touch the other end on the positive terminal of the battery. unless the starter is seized solid the starter should turn the engine over it will not start as long as the ignition switch is in the off position. If you hear clicking but no turning over it could be the positive feed to the starter(the thick red cable) or the earth cable to the engine. if a click is heard try connecting a jump lead from the starter motor flange on a clean patch of metal and a good earth point on the body or better still the negative terminal of the battery, then try again, if the earth is at fault the motor will turn over. leave the jump lead in place and do the same with the positive terminal on the solenoid to the battery positive then try again, this is harder if your battery is under the drivers seat, but can be done moving the battery to the rear and connecting to its terminals.
If you hear no clicking at all it will be your solenoid on the starter motor because you should still hear a click even if the starter is seized

And the winner is....whoever suggested earthing problems.

Seems that new starter motor covered in powdercoat connected to nearly new gearbox wasn't giving a good enough earth. The earth from gearbox to chassis was fine which was why it was misleading.

Lead from starter bolt to battery -ve, and it fired up straight away T

No mate all this is because garages can't always help us t25 owners with out payment of a bill.
I say garages are the last place you should be ending up at with a little problem... such as this for instance
