half way down this page it states that 2108rhd syncro's were produced, seams to have very exact figures for all modles produced.

As to salt on road i would say it has a lot more to do with europeans in general looking after their vehicles a lot better (and some, not many areas not using salt) than UK's its a banger as its more than 5 year old.
As to the figure on numbers, that is vehicles made and assembled by VW Germany not elsewhere.
This one has been kicked to death for years now same as ekta dosent list all options available.

I was wondering how long it would be, before someone brought race into it!! :rollin

No, I suspect the truth is alot simpler. If, lets say, 20% of owners take time & effort (wash any salt off, paint chips, garage, keep well maintained etc etc) with their cars. Then 20% will be nice rock-solid motors. 20% of 2108 is a-hell-of-a-lot-less than 20% of 50,000(?).

As to numbers, I too have heard there is no definite number, but how a major car company, be that VW or PUCH, cannot keep track/records of how many they were making is hard to believe (the taxman must know!). But I guess there can't be more than 2300. Could someone just remind me where you go to find out the history of your VW again?

I think the numbers thing might have something to do with the fact that there was large numbers of vehicles sold to NATO and various armed forces ie Germany and Finland and maybe these customers are not keen to divulge their actual purchase numbers. I dont know but its a possible answer.

I have heard stories of large quantities of 16" Hightops stashed away in Scandinavia waiting for Armageddon or some such unlikely event (England wining the world cup for example :rofl :rofl )

If you want to buy a syncro in the UK, ie not go and import one (which would obveously be LHD), what is actully more common now? I bought a RHD (with a rather ironic numberplate  ) simply because the vehicle which came up at a tempting price when I was fealing stupid happened to be RHD, never got an insurance quote on a left hooker but unless it was significantly more I would have equally got one, afterall there are enough LHD bits in the UK now to easilly source (trim bits etc) and you can tell they are designed LHD and modified to right (all non jap cars now are designed LHD, just like British cars up to the Austin-Rover era were designed RHD).

So is this RHD is rare thing actully true yet? In the early 90's all but a handfull of syncros in the UK were RHD, few were inthuseast owned, where as nearly all the LHD imports would have been so have they just taken over as all the unloved RHDs got beaten into the ground (just to be stuck on ebay)? RHD must still be resionably abundant, its just the people who go to the effort of importing a lefty usally wouldn't bother doing it with a complete lemon, though we've all herd of a few over the years!

Was the ZA vans the only proper RHD bodyed vans out there or did other non european RHD markets get them as aposed to the modified twinsliders we got here?

only SA got the rhd panels as they made them and VWUK and other rhd markets didn't insist on them once they became available in SA in the late eighties - I don't know when SA started building them I think 87-88 - Russel will be along shortly to confirm

Well I'll get in first! Small window SA's are so similar to German/lhd vans it's not worth talking about. The only exterior clue is that they have a proper offside rear wing (no false slider cover) but the floors are the same * and have a fill-in panel to cover the redundant slider cut-out behind the driver.
Big window vans continued this exterior theme (obviously...) but oddly still have the fill-in panel in the floor.
* All have a circular cover in the floor behind the passenger to access the fuel sender in the big tank.

sa vans also have correct rhd front panel with pressed wiper supports instead of the bodged lhd ones we have with the redundant lhd supports and plastic packers

Hi all,

This is probs a stupid question but is there a small access panel in the floor to access fuel tank sender etc in standard T 25 s or is it a tank drop job, just asking before i rip up me carpets pointlessly. :rofl
