As Goldsyncro says, avoid at peak times (no pun intended). I've 'done' the Picos camping and walking about 5 times usually spending about 3-4 weeks between Asturias and Cantabria in my trusty Beetle in the late 90's. It's the most beautiful place in Autumn and Spring but the amount of traffic jams during summer especially to 'Los Lagos' is crazy.
You used to be able to camp (on permit) at Lago Enol and it was a great place as a base for walking to the various refugios but unfortunately the last time I was there a few years ago it was a carpark.
I go to Asturias every year ( my partner is from there) and I enjoy the food ,hospitality, people and real mountains (as opposed to the mounds here). Oh yeah, and Sidra!

Musings on ferry to Spain vs. drive through France...
Bristol - Hannover (ferry Dover to Dunkerque) = 1018kms
Bristol - Santander (ferry Poole to Cherbourg) = 1365kms. For my LPG'd 2.1DJ this very roughly equals an extra tank of gas each way.
Bristol - Santander (ferry Dover to Dunkerque!) = 1728kms. For my LPG'd 2.1DJ this very roughly equals two extra tanks of gas each way.
Who's done the drive through France?
If you drive longs days the continental drive can be done in 2 days - I used to know someone who drove Toulouse - Le Havre in 1 day.
Ferry costs from Southern England to Cherbourg, Roscoff and St. Malo seem to be £300+ for a campervan as they charge for overnight accommodation, so not worth doing as an alternative to UK-Spain ferry.
Ferry cost Dover to Dunkerque = £25.

We've done Dunkerque to Leipzig in one - about 11 hours.
Also in a brief period of madness I did Venice to Hamburg in one - 17 hours and nearly a divorce.
It isn't pleasant doing more than 8 hours.
For this trip we are looking at approx. 2000 km each way, probably over 3 days (each way).
