ive used ash and thin marine ply a couple times, i think someone else said they had too, ash is a litttle expensive, but its strong but will flex and excellent to fix in to.

I used to build speakers from MDF, commercially . Its a fantastic material that can be finished to a very high standard. If you have to screw it then just get proper MDF screws. Another method is to use expanding biscuits.

But it is a bit heavy :ok
