You guys are always finding a syncro 16 in a field or barn somewhere it seems
I wish it were true but we do get barn finds still (click and there was a Tristar found in a field mid 2007 IIRC )...... Most of the Syncros on this forum (UK and Ireland) are 14" versions as we never got the 16" versions either - all LHD. (Correct me someone if Im wrong) One advantage we have, of course over you guys in Oz and the States, is that we can nip across to mainland Europe and get what ever vehicles we fancy and be back home in a day!
Most of us here have gone to 15" wheels as the tyre selection is much better, some have stayed on 14" rims and some have gone up to 16" rims but with body/suspension mods and there will be a few of us who will follow the type of advancements that you guys in the States are doing which brings me back to my original thought ....... how much better can they be made and is it cost effective?
Cost effective- no. They are expensive upgrades. It isn't very common for people to do them here.
Are they better- yes.
One of the best drivers around here uses a pretty stock syncro with dual lockers and bigger tires and drives anywhere he wants.
adian if it is still ok could you let jed have one of the moded trailing arms that i could use as a template? found a pair localy for reasionable money that i will chop. and do you know if the rubber bushes still avalible from vw? as i will probobly end up getting them blasted and plated,
if I can get to the lock up before the w/e then yes I'll bring one, vw bushes were available last time I wanted them, I have the press tools for fitting them
raised shock mounts would be good to 25mm I think, needs some nice metal work to add and be safe and not upset mot man
MGs limey thread illustrates his....
Don't know about raising the shock mounts, have not really thought that far ahead. more about loosing the seams And a bit of material removal as doug has done, but it is food for thought. I am gussing that it would have the same effect as adding spacers to the under side of the springs?
to put the dampers back into their optimum length for travel with spacers on the coils , to stop dampers topping out before spring reaches full travel with standard dampers rather than Simon or others longer ones
been doing a bit of reshurch about the painting/plating of the arms
1 shot blast and powder coat them about £50
2 shot blast zinc prime and stove enamle them, about £100
3 shot blast them and hot dip galvanise them, £60 based on minimum charge
what would give the best long term rust protection?
Any one thinking of modifying there trailing arms and want more clearance for snow chains might find this of interest. I was looking at Neils van today at work then looked at mine and noticed a shed loads of room on my van and not much on his. Then we released i have spacers on my wheels due to them being merc alloys and longer studs too. I could get my fist behind the tyre and arm and if i ground off the seam i would have even more room. Soooooo a couple of quid for some spacers would see you right rather than all the fannying around and the best part of £200 to get them chopped up new bushes, powder coating etc. Another lesson learned I guess....

And thats what most of it is ....... 'fannying around'!!
One of my mates just cut and shut a pair of 2wd rear arms to make an arm 2" longer than normal (1" longer than a 16") version.
Was reinforced inside with box section and has built in raised spring mounting platform to hopefully give a 2" raise in rideheight.
Have you got any pics? Ive been thinking about doing somthing simular, mines is still a little a*** heavy at the mo
