Re: Excited New members first van!
Thanks all,
Well it made the 100 mile trip home with no problems (just 3 coughs on the m6 but I think I'd left it in 4th too long on a hill). Heaters worked ok but did smell a bit like hot paint - not fumey though. I enjoyed every second - nice feeling when you manage to catch a ride at the back of a juggernaut!
Its had its first bath today and I've been and bought a leisure battery - new stereo going in and an interior fettle while its raining me thinks.
I definitely will be coming to some of the meets - just got my member number through so I'll try and track down any upcoming get togethers.
Big Smiles,
Pete

Re: Excited New members first van!
yo and welcome to the gang!
I spotted you say it has a CT engine - there are many people who have opinions about these engines - then there are people like me/therunner/akirk etc that have other opinions about them
* When the engine was done do you know if the heat exchangers were replaced? - you mentioned paint smell on way home..
* Do you also know if the heads were changed/looked at when the barrels/pistons were done? these engines have a known habit of cracking heads (upside is as it's 1600cc at a push you can put on beetle heads!)
* Have a feel for/check of the rubber fuel filler neck behind the filler cap up under the front drivers wheel arch - these on the early vans are nearly all now perished and when you fill the tank up you can spray petrol all over the floor.....
If you have any questions.... just ask

Re: Excited New members first van!
Thank you for the extended warm welcome everyone!
Dugcati: Yea I'm in Belper so not far from Derby, thanks for the kind offer
. Last year it had pistons and barrels, from all the receipts it looks like its had two sets of cylinder heads over its life (i.e. 4 new ones) last done in '06. It has had a new heat exchanger but that was in '01. I had to get under to get the starter motor off yesterday (turned out to be just a rubbish connection - yey to free fixes
) and the exchanger i saw looked pretty tired - are there 2?
I intend to buy a carbon monoxide alarm as a matter of course anyway, but I will certainly keep an eye on them. There are a few bits painted under there and I'm hoping thats where the smell was coming from.
Thanks for the heads up on the filler... had a quick look and its not looking too bad at the mo - perhaps being garaged for 12 years has helped it live a little longer!
Got the fridge out now and am going to look at all the advice on here to try and get it working again.....just love tinkering with it!!

The CT engines are ok, just a little slow, but once you learn where the peak torque is etc, it makes driving them so much easier. Enjoy the slow lane with us other CT owners, we may be slow but we will get there eventually lol

Re: Excited New members first van!
Treefiddy - there is a bit of a Derby meet happening next week - see thread https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49822
Would be great if you came a long with us - there are a few of us in Derby so we can go convoy
If your'e worried about your heat exchangers and you come along next week I can take a looksy if you like - if need be I have some spare CT heat exchangers although the exhaust on a CT is an odd one and like many once you disturb one bit invariably you end up pulling most of it off and replacing bits you didn't want to (rusty exhaust bolts syndrome!)
As Andrew says...

Awesome thanks, we'll be there. Assuming the van makes its first day trip up to 'The Cat and Fiddle' today - cracking roads! (right up on the moors near Buxton if ya don't know it).
