I'm suspecting I may have bought the wrong ignition coil...

Just looked on the Brickwerks site and they have an ignition coil with green label... (this is what I had)... and it's £55.30 (http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

The one I bought off JustKampers mentions nothing about labels and was only £17.57 (http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... -coil.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

So I'm guessing it's the wrong one due to the huge price difference... (don't know why i didn't check out brickwerks first!)

I swapped the ignition coil back to the old one and it still doesn't fire... I haven't had anyone around at all today to tell me if the plugs are sparking, so I'll have to wait til later for that.

I checked the rotor arm today and noticed that it has cracked down one side (which I presume happened when I attached the distributor cap wrongly yesterday, so I've ordered a replacement one)... I'm beginning to think I really shouldn't touch engines...

I had the same problem the other week. The van(1.9inj) had been stood about 2 weeks & wouldn't start for love nor money. Checked the plugs, caps, leads, rotor, dizzy, earth connections etc, all to no avail. As the van had been parked on a road with quite a camber, I decided it mustn't be getting any fuel even though the fuel guage said I had a full amount of reserve, so I put about a gallon in. Flattened the bettery trying to start it but luckily have a spare so I changed them over & give it a bit of welly before it tried to start, then started & ticked over for afew seconds & died. Tried again & it burst into life & ticked over nicely. The fuel guage read a qtr full when it was actually into its reserve, lying little bugger of a fuel guage.

So I'd check that you have fuel at the carb' as it may have fuel but as previously stated in this thread - it takes a while to get it through from the tank.

Well, there's definitely a spark... so I'm guessing it is a fuel issue...

I've noticed that a small amount of petrol is seeping from the pipe that goes into the filter... so that needs sorting... Would this affect the amount of fuel getting to the engine?

The fuel filter needs replacing as a matter of course ... they're about a £. Is the ignition timing known to be correct ?

I assume the timing is ok as it was running fine before this... but I'm not 100% sure.

I will change the fuel filter. The one I fitted the other day was a bit smaller than the previous one..

this ebay item (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Universal-Fuel-Fi ... 240%3A1318" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) shows a larger one and a smaller one. I got one off Just Kampers and it was more like the smaller of these. Would the larger be better???

the pump is at the engine, sucking from the tank, so if petrol is getting out, air is getting in, so sucking not happening to full capacity, size of filter not really important, small ones ok!its along way to suck, and takes ages

tip a cap full in the top of the carb, top off the gallon can about 2 times as much as you want to drop in there, see if it fires

a common mistake folks make with these vans is to put a fuel filter in the engine bay.not realizing there is one just after the tank.and this one gets clogged up.im not saying you have done this.but its worth mentioning..

Followed your advice and put some petrol in the carb and after a couple of tries, it kicked into life...

Thanks for all your help! No doubt I will need more in the future...

Just need to replace the exhaust, get the carb checked out, change the cracked front tyre and sort the electric problem with the dash... and then maybe I can drive it without worrying whether I'll make it back!! ha ha...
