just to throw the whole thing up in the air again, but not to sway your choice. I too had this conversation with members of my local club BBC SE4VW, and the jury is out whether a Vege, or Remtec engine. Just go with your gut feeling cos your right cos the PRICE IS RIGHT.

Like you say which ever way you go its gonna be a gamble, so take the gamble. Spending £680, is less of a gamble than nearly 2k and finding out youv'e got it wrong.

No matter how many people post a reply on this subject, nothing beats personal experience.

So find out for yourself, and only after you have given your final choice a real test, then let the world of 80-90 know, cos i'm sure you will tell it as it is. Good Luck. :D

The estimate that i received from them was the bare miinimum.
I think that by the time they added all the extras on (oil , filters ,hoses and bits and bobs is probably best part of 2k anyway!
Getting mixed messages about Vege. Taking the plunge with Elite.
Just cant get away from the fact that it is a risky business , whichever option you choose really!!

ok personal experience....I wouldn't touch them (volkspares, NOT elite!!!) AGAIN with a bargepole. They supplied me with an Aircooled engine, which suffered a leak about 2 months in from a seal which should have been changed which wasn't, and the whole right had side lost power totally.....under the 12K miles but over the 12 month warrenty. Both times they were not remotely interested in repairing vehicle.....only got the seal done as it was a coulple of months in, and the garage who fitted it replaced the seal and then chased volkspares for the money. I assume he got it back - he never said.

But, tis only MY experience

mmmm, interesting to hear your thoughts on Volkspares , Em.
I used them a few years ago on a T4 and was very impressed. Have since heard that they have been taken over by someone else and have lost a bit of their reputation. Shame really.
I take it that your engine is a vege??

Hi Shaun,

couldn't afford Vege - got an Elite one in John's van (changed 1.9 to 2.1) - I have got a £300 second hand 2.1 totally unknown other than it was bought through the club, and the seller was confident it was running well when he sold it (sell alot of engines etc) - admittedly we have been lucky....

The elite engine has so far been fine; it has been serviced by them as per their service schedule - remember that in the course of the two years you can put in essence another £300 on the price of the engine.....perhaps that is how they do it for the price.....not sure on the guarantee if they don't service?

I think that they replace whatever they think is necessary!
When i spoke to them i asked if they fit a new oil pump and they told me that they make sure that the one they fit is in good workign condition.
So , basically they replace for good second hand where they feel that they can get away with it. Dont forget the 2 year warranty!
You have to be realistic here. £680....aint gonna be a brand new parts throughout![/img]

Another shout for VEGE here. Had a replacement VEGE unit in my 1.9 wasserboxer 3 years ago, and it's always pulled like a train.

stick a 2.1 in with elite....one stone..

Do you think it's worth upgrading to a 2.1?
I asked the bloke from Elite about it and he seemed to think that there is no significant increase in power and not worth bothering about.
They're picking up my van on Monday night to replace my 1.9 water cooled , like for like.
I s'pose now is the time for me to decide!
