Hiya! Thank you! I've only realize there were 3 pages to this! Today it seems to have settled down.....4 hours driving without adding water!!!! It seems it may have been the cap!! Thank you though. I'm keeping your details! Thank you everyone for helping! I love you all!! Gonna post piccies soon on my lovely Tink. I'm a face painter, and a bit snowed under, computer work isn't natural to me, and I'll need a full day to work out how to post. I have had help from you (8090) so I'll get it done! Xxxxxxxx

Disconnect the hose, take the Dalek cap off and blow down the spigot (pipe) ... it should 'toot', if it just blows through the valve has failed (or never even worked in the first place).

The rule of thumb to guarantee quality of your replacement parts is only to buy from Brickwerks. They are a working garage that specialises in VW T25/T3s and will not fit cr@p parts because they know they will end up having to replace them themselves ... so much so they started their own business flogging these parts. Do NOT use Just Krappers and be careful what you buy from the likes of GSF etc.

Can't help other than that as I don't 'do' Derv  Nasty, smelly filthy stuff

I have just picked up on this conversation because I have a related issue. My 1.6 TD blew its head gasket a while ago. I had it repaired but it has never been right since, probably because I put a lot of rad seal in before the repair. I replaced the Radiator that was completly blocked, which stopped any over heating but there is a problem with the water level going down when it gets up to temp. If I release the pressure at the darlek cap, while it is still hot then seal it again, coolant is drawn up into the top up tank. Though the level isn't restored if the cap is left off. I have replaced the top up tank (which I thought might be leaking), the cap and water sensor. It is not overheating and the problem only happens when the needle slightly climbs past centre, eg. going up Dettling or Westerham Hills, usually the needle sits just before the centre. It has been suggested that this problem could be caused by the thermostat trapping air, though I can't understand how. It doesn't take long to get to normal and then stays there so I can't see how it could be blocked or always open. (I have read on the Wiki page how awful replacing a stat is). I read the last comment about sub standard darlek caps. Could it be the new replacement from EuroSpares sucks but can't blow? i.e. can't release pressure but can draw up coolant? There isn't air in the rad, as I have become expert at checking and bleeding!

Hi Martin and welcome, easy things first; replace the ( darlek ) cap,buy one from someone like Brickwerks .
Just to make things clear, the top up tank is the one behind the number plate flap.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Replacing a thermostat is simple - are you reading instructions for those funny petrol engines? 5-6 minute job.
