Thanks . I know zero about electrics so about time I did! I checked for amp drain at battery and there wasn't any so I guessed all was OK with the alternator. It just sprang to mind that I've had many engine swaps and Andrew told me last time that I've got an early engine now. Do you think that the second red wire(same gauge as the starter battery wire) went to something I no longer have?

The erratic starting has been a pain for ages. Thanks to everyone for their advice. One less thing to worry about

Generally there are two red wires from alternator. One goes to starter, the other to a post with a nut on it in black box in engine bay. I mention this connection here:

I only have the one from alternator now - as explained above.

Thanks CK. Good read. Wiring and split charge seem to be fine now. Battery still ran out of juice quickly so its probably had its day.
